Valve Deshrouding

Quick 8

Mike,

I am going to do some valve deshrouding. I am hoping to pick up some flow, but mostly I'm looking to make the chamber bigger for my turbo engine. Are there any areas to avoid due to casting thickness? Is there a minimum recommended casting thickness for the chamber? Your input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

Don't open it up too large around the valves or you'll exceed the head gasket fire ring diameter.
Unless you're going with a copper gasket, then go hog wild!

Thanks. Yeah I know that the head gasket limits the diameter I can open it up. My main concern it how thick the material in the chamber itself is. I don't want to scrap the head by removing too much in the wrong place.

There's lots of material there.
Also if you do happen to go to far, it's aluminum.....it can be fixed!

Great! Thanks for the info!
Can you still get header flanges for this head?
I'm going to start my turbo header soon.
Thanks.

Jim

I picked up another cylinder head yesterday when I was in LA. It had a flaw in the casting, so we decided not to use it. However I still had them send it over so I could give it to my head porter. He plans to grind away at it, and cut it up so we'll know precisely what the limitations are, and where. I'll be sure to get pics and post them on the website.
