Mystery hole in the intake manifold.

Hi, This is probably a dumb question. I finally got around to installing my Classic Inlines head. When i unwrapped the intake manifold I see an unthreaded hole in the manifold below where the carb will mount facing the block. It does not seem to lead in to the actual runners. What is this for? I've attached a picture. Thanks, Jay

That hole is used to remove core sand. We put a plug in them now.
I believe the previous response is correct regarding the 2 threaded holes on the outboard side of the plenum. Maybe plumbed originally?
