85 f150 No power, sometimes cuts in and back out?

Post #1 by 85Beast6 » Sun Sep 27, 2015 9:05 pm

My truck isn't getting any power. It has a new battery, starter, alternator, and starter solenoid. This happened all of a sudden one day after stopping at the gas station and it wouldn't start. Sometimes it gets power but not enough to start but to make the door buzzer start buzzing again. No power to head lights. Anyone have this problem? Is it maybe in the steering column ignition? I had a shop working on it one week before replace the carb with one that didn't have elec. Could there be a problem from that? it was working. Anyways, if you have any advice you can share please let me know. Thanks for your time.

Yes I would definitely check out the ignition switch to see if its still working correctly. That would also include the linkage from the key unit down to the switch itself or it might only need to be adjusted at the switch because of wear. I.e. It's not moving the ignition switch internally to the corect position to touch the contacts to start or run. Also if the switch is older it might be worn out and time to replace it too. Good luck

Maybe a ground problem.
Start at the battery and work your way around the electrical, wiggling and inspecting all the wires and connections.

Is there a fusible link in the system?

I had a problem like this with my 93 f150, went on for almost a year. Intermident cutting out of power, it would blink out going down the road sometimes. Couldn't figure it out. It turned out to be a smallish ground wire that goes to the fender near the battery. I never looked into what it went to, figured it out by luck poking around up there when it was acting up one night bad and I was stuck on a country road with the light disappearing fast. But it sure fixed it tightening it up, been a few years now, still fine. That wire being disconnected/lose would kill everything on the truck, including the ignition.
It ain't gonna fix itself
