Ford Duraspark on a 1968 200 CID

Post #1 by notar61 » Tue Feb 05, 2019 11:24 am

Can I put a Ford Duraspark distributor on a 1968 200 straight six engine?

I have a wiring harness and an ignition control module box. So I just need a distributor. Will any Duraspark distributor that was on a 200 CID engine work? Or do I need something more specific?

Thanks for any info!

The Ford DSI or DSII distributor can be used on the '68 200 . The DSI uses an original Points type and size dist. cap and plug wires >T he DSII uses a larger cap with the later pin terminal plug and coil terminals. the DSII is preferred unless you want to keep the authentic earlier points 'look'. Early six engines used a distributor that the DSI/DSII will not fit due to casting and drive differences. Providing your engine is @ 1966 or newer . (castings C6DE or C8DE) DS dist should work. You didn't mention if you are swapping to a DSII type full 12Volt coil to complete setup .

@powerband

Yeah I actually have a MSD 8200 coil sitting around. Sounds like all I need to do is find a distributor!

Best to confirm the 200 block' generation numbers. Should be on right side of engine behind starter if no other proof. Engine swaps are common so it's best to confirm.

Hi, the easy way to figure it out is the early distributors have a 1/4" hex shaft to drive the oil pump.
The later one you want is the 5/16 shaft.
Don't pull the hex shaft out of the engine. You will never get it back into the oil pump.
Measure your distributor shaft with a 5/16 Allen key.
All later 5/16" shaft distributors interchange.
The Duraspark is very good.
Good luck
B RON CO. Still workin' on it!
