Which trans makes more noise?

Post #1 by Wesman07 » Thu Nov 30, 2017 5:49 am

Currently have a NP 435 and the trans is just as loud as my motor. Is the BG T19 any quieter??

The NP435 would be loud in 1st and reverse, but if it's loud in 2-4, there's something wrong with it.

How long has it been since it's last servicing? How many miles are on it?

It got new syncros and maybe bearings around 130k. It probably has 230k on it now.

I tried the Lucas oil stabilizer and it helped some, but it's still pretty loud.

Does it sound like bearing noise, or gear noise? I'm assuming gears as you said it was loud in 2-3 but didn't mention 4. Unfortunately I can't really offer useful advice beyond 'have someone look at it' as I've not had this problem yet, but that's not the normal operational noise I'm used to.

Never had one of the Borg Warner T19's but severial of T18's and NP435's, but I don't think there would be very much differance in loudness between any of them. The real big plus of the BW T19 though is that it's all sinc. even in granny low so for that reason I would want to use one of them if I had one and if it turns out to be quieter then that's an extra bonus also. If the bearings are good in your NP435 a couple of things you can do to lower the noise. First is spray some undercoating on truck cab floor (underneath, inside the doors, and roof) and then put some Jute padding or the (dyna mat) inside do the firewall too, plus carpet. You can use a some rubber heater hose on the shift handle to cut down on some of vibration noise too. Good luck

I am still hunting for a project car to build but with my current low budget it's not looking so good. My Ex- Fleet of Sixes these are all long gone! :bang: 1954 Customline 223 3 speed with O/D, 1963 Fairlane project drag car with BB6, 1977 Maverick 250 with C4, 1994 F-150 a 300 with 5 speed.

Thanks for the replies. I have tried some insulation which helped a lot. I still think my trans is just as noisy as my motor... which seems a bit high.

Do any of you guys have foam inside your shifter boot?
