C6 block what will fit?

Post #1 by rommaster2 » Thu Oct 08, 2009 7:16 pm

ok well i have a gentleman who wants to purchase my 3 speed toploader from a 67 mustang for his vehicle. the question i have is whether or not the bell housing will bolt up as he has a 66 block, now i know my 65 block will not work with the bell housing but i'm not sure if the 66 block is the same as a 67 or if that was the in between years as i know that the 66 mustangs still came with a 2.77 tranny while 67 and up came with the 3.03.

So is it just that the 66 block got a special one year only 2.77 bell housing and they have a standard dual drilled pattern that will work with the 3.03 housing? Or do they require a special one for 66 only?

1966 blocks should be dual drilled and would allow the C7 bell housing to attach. Have him check the top back of the engine.
The only reason I can think of for Ford putting those 2.77 trannys on the 66 is to get rid of the old stock before the switchover. Seems like a waste though since the bolt pattern did not work for the 3.03 toploader. I have both bells in my garage I use for data purposes. What size flywheel did you have? Was it 9 "?

Note: We did have a thread where one of our members had a 66 200 out of a Bronco that had 4 mains which was the early style. I am not sure whether he had the dual pattern though.

Yep, as kukm66 said, '66 (C6) should be a dual pattern block meaning it will take the larger C7 bellhousing. Also, '66 was the first year of the 9" flat flywheel as well which continued on after '67, and uses the same starter mount so he should be good.

"In 1967, Ford changed the bellhousing again. This new bellhousing used the same 9" flywheel block plate and starter as the ’66, but a new clutch fork is used in this application. This bell is the same height as the '66 bell."
