Post #1 by early ford fan » Fri Sep 03, 2010 8:20 pm

i have a 67 bellhousing coming so i can bolt up my toploader od trans.is there any combination of parts that will allow me to keep my 8.5 flywheel annd pressure plate and use the 67 up pilot bearing and throwout bearing?if so what starter would work?i know i need a different clutch disc.

well sadly if you have the small flywheel you may not be able you bolt the 67 bell to your block unless you have the duel pattern block if you do then i still thin you will have to change the clutch and fly wheel

8) the starter is going to be the same, and in the same location, and the flywheels are the same diameter, it is the friction surface that is different. you should be able to find a clutch disc that will work with the smaller friction surface and the top loader trans. i believe that a four cylinder T5 disc will work but check first to be sure.

I'm not 100% positive, but I believe the 8.5" flywheel w/132 teetch gear is going to come up short inside a 67 bell. IIRC the OD of the 8.5"/132 is like 11-1/8" while the OD of the 9"/136 is closer to 11-13/16"

8) near as i can tell, all the high mount starter bell housings have the starter in the same location, which means that the flywheels are the same diameter.

Could be?...I can't confirm the OD on the 8.5" gear, but have confirmed the OD on the 9". 65 and earlier BH are definitely smaller than the one year 66 or the the 67 and up to srod...66 and later being the higher/larger diam drilled dual pattern blocks, and I've only 'heard' you can't fit a 9" in the early bells where an 8.5" will fit, but have not seen it for myself.
...guess it's it's like an old professor of mine would say..."it's like the sign outside the mortuary...remains to be seen" 8)
