Best Performance Transmission for 200?

Post #1 by Inlinefanatic1968 » Sun Oct 17, 2010 7:08 pm

I have heard much information about the T-5, 3 speed Toploader, 4 speed Toploader, etc. Are there any higher performance automatic transmissions for a 200ci? What is the best transmission for performance but can still be used for a peppy daily driver? How much modifications are needed to accomplish this? Costs?
And of this, where can I find one for a decent price?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

8) unless you want to try and modify the 5r55 trans to work with the C3 bellhousing, ala frankentranny, the best you can do is a good C4 trans, unless you use an 81-93 3.3l block which has 2/3rds of the ford six bolt bellhousing pattern. there is a procedure to make that trans work with the late block in the tech section of this site.

For the amount of HP they soak up a T-5 will be the most efficent.

T5 can be used with varied gearing for maximum performance to maximum economy or simply the best Overdrive available compromise.

Thanks for the Information! Out of everywhere I have checked all over, no one had this information. I guess i'll just stick with the C-4. I have seen perofrmance C-4's all over the internet. But are they only for v-8's? Or for 6's as well?

8) the nice thing about the C4 is that the bell housings are removable so that you can use a six cylinder bell on a V8 built trans. the only issue is the torque converter. make sure you get one that matches the spline count on the input shaft of the transmission.

Howdy Inline:

And welcome to the Forum. If you like your C4 consider adding a shift kit to yours and see how you like that change. A kit is basically a bolt off, modify the plate, swap pressure springs and put it back together. The kit will tighten up all gear transitions and raise line pressure. The other trans issue for performance is the torque converter. A little looser give more snap and power off the line. Too loose and daily driving becomes a nightmare. A good rebuilder can modify your Tqconverter to have a little higher stall speed. Be careful- "A little" can vary alot from engine to engine.

The other issue for trans selection is matching the rearend gear ratio to meet your goal. In general street/performance driving a modified C4, with a looser converter and a 3.25:1 rear end gear makes for a fun and suprisingly spirited ride.

When you asked what's the "best"? Many factors enter into the answer- Uses, budget, degree of difficulty, ease and availability are but a few. What's "best" for you?

A little get up and go but im not killing my MPG of course. I am actually thinking about throwing a "T-5Z" in there since I have a rear end with 3.33 gears. Only problem is finding the pedal, the box, clutch, transmission, etc. To make this conversion. Does anyone know where I can fin parts to do this?

Does anyone know what performance wise, the T-5 will increase over the stock C4? MPG? Power production?

8) transmissions dont change engine power, but there will be a slight improvement in rear wheel power due to lower friction losses with the manual trans. the difference isnt much though. the biggest advantage the T5 has over the C4 is two extra gears, one being an overdrive.

Well yes, I meant the transfer of the power more efficiently. Thanks for the info!
