8 inch rear with 300 engine

Post #1 by 67chrrybucket » Tue Jul 09, 2013 8:09 am

So my 67 comet has an 8inch rear the design with more webbing on the third member, i was told the weak link in these rears is the axles so if i got a set of Moser custom axles would this 8 stand up to a 300 mildly modified with a toploader 4spd or am i wasting my time and need to swap a 9" in the onlu reason i want to try and use it is because its lighter and i thought i could save some $

8) a stock 8" rear end can handle about 350hp, 375 on street tires. so unless you are going to make more than that with your 300, you should be good to go.

Any boost in reliability by changing axles or switching to an LSD diff in the 8"

8) changing to stronger axles always improves reliability and power handling. depending on the axles you can gain another 50hp power handling. using an LSD might help power handling wise, but is really just for better power transfer between the rear tires.

As long as you dont run Slicks or Drag Radials, you should be ok. Be sure to have Car set up so it wont wheel hop. Paint a line down each axle so you can ck. for any twisting. Try not to do hard Clutch dumps. :? But some folks can break a Crowbar in a sand box. :rolflmao: Have seen 8 inch axles hold up fine on the Drag strip, with Auto trans. & Slicks.
