Mustang six rear wheel bearings replacement: heat/chill method

Post #1 by AZstang66 » Wed Mar 29, 2017 3:09 pm

Hi everyone,

Been a while since posting on this forum but glad it's back up! Hi to anyone who remembers me or my yellow 66 stang! I am in the process of re-restoring it and here is my q:

I am thinking of replacing the rear wheel bearings on my 66 200 mustang. Believe it has a '67 200 8" rear.
Typical process is to install the bearings via press.

Has anyone done this via heat/chill?

I am thinking:
1. Liq. Nit. Bath on the axle
2. Inner race oven heat
3. Drop it on, seat
4. Normalize (w a weight to keep in place)
5. bing bang boom all done

Thoughts?

Use a chisel & strike the inner retaining ring. That will expand it enough to remove it by hand.
Next see if the bearing can be removed via a press. If it won't budge you will have to use a carbide cutting wheel & cut the bearing till loose & then remove.
To install a new bearing you can heat it a little then press it on. Then press on the inner retaining ring.
Install new seals in the axle housing & reinstall the axles. Its wise to put lube on the area of the axle where the seal contacts it. That's it after bolting the retaining plates to hold the axle in.

Hi, X2, any shop with a press and a bearing splitter has done this plenty of times. Lube the seals before carefully installing the axles. Note one side is longer so mark them left and right and don't mix them up. Good luck

Haven't performed the job yet. Just finished moving from Cincinnnati to Seattle area and have installed a new shop press. Will update when I get to the job... chances are I will do the "standard" press off/press on Method, versus trying to reduce the interference fit by liquid nitrogen chilling.
