Manual trans options for 94 300/4.9 inline 6

Post #1 by brandoncw » Sat May 06, 2017 11:09 pm

I am doing a big conversion to 4x4 in my 94 f150, since I will be swapping from a 2x4 trans to 4x4, I want to know what the best option is. I want a trans that will require NO modifications to the truck or trans for the sake of time to install it. Are there any granny low trans that will work with a transfer case off of a c6? I just happen to have a good tcase. Thanks

The 5 speed transmissions used in 4x4 F150 trucks from 1988 to 1996 (and maybe also the F250 versions) used with the 4.9 (300), 5.0 (302), 5.7 (351)'engines will be closest to your bolt in requirements. You would also need the 4.9 flywheel and clutch unit, all the brake & clutch pedal setup and its related parts which is a Hydrolic type used in these years of trucks. Be aware that the 4x4 trucks also use a diffent chassis then a 2x4 does. i.e. the front of the frame is different to be able to mount the front drive axle. As far as doing it without any mods to your current truck in my opinion I don't think that it can be done as far as the front drive axle is concerned, good luck on your swap.

I am still hunting for a project car to build but with my current low budget it's not looking so good. My Ex- Fleet of Sixes these are all long gone! :bang: 1954 Customline 223 3 speed with O/D, 1963 Fairlane project drag car with BB6, 1977 Maverick 250 with C4, 1994 F-150 a 300 with 5 speed.

The truck is already a manual, almost all the 300s were, and I know that the f150s from 90-96 have the same frame to save production cost so the front axle will literally bolt right in. I have everything but the trans for the swap and want to know the best course of action on what model of trans I should get

:hmmm: Ok then, you already have a M5R2 5 speed transmission in your truck, that would of actually helped to know in your first post. So now your choices (using your stated best options with no mods to the truck) can be narrowed down to two. First is to use the trans you already have and replace the output shaft and tail housing with the M5R2 4x4 parts or Second to find a 1988 to 1996 M5R2 4x4 version transmission to bolt in with all factory stock Ford 1988 to 1996 4x4 parts. Good luck on your swap.
