C4 clutch disc number upgrade....

Post #1 by lahti35 » Thu Jul 20, 2017 11:30 am

So I've got my 66 dated C4 that came out of a 200 6 cylinder car... legend has it that it has fewer clutch plates than V8 C4 of the same vintage... Legend also says that you can swap in the V8 drums to increase the number of clutch discs.

Which drums do you need to do this? The direct drum and the forward drum?

Also I've heard that more clutches = more drag in a lower gear.

I'm installing this C4 into my '64 wagon which I am going to use to haul a small pop up camper. I want to build this into a tough and reliable towing rig.

In the book Modifying Fords SOHC by David Vizard, there is a Keith Roof of Arizona Transmissions rebuild of the 4-cylinder Pinto 2000 C4. (An error in typesetting says C3 rebuild). It's page 147 to 164. (Keith is now the President and Owner of Transmission Products Inc. 490 W. 2nd Street, Tucson , AZ 85705 http://www.tranprod.com/ )

Count the dark ones in the packs.

A very basic rundown, not related to the 4 cyl 135 teeth and 6 cylinder 132 teeth and C5, 164 teeth Auto's.

No mention of the Mustang II 302 flexplate teeth count or friction pack numbers for sixes.

I had the front band in our early 65 mustang go bad and score the outside mating surface of the front drum. I could not find a six cylinder drum or a rigid band and had to go with a drum for a V-8 and had my existing band re-lined. The only difference in the drum was the placement of the interior snap ring to hold the clutches was further out to allow for the additional friction and steel clutch plate. Six cylinders have 4 friction plates and eight cylinders have 5 friction plates if memory serves me correctly. I watched the "Bad Shoe" C4 videos on YouTube and it guided me through the whole repair. I have heard that there are performance kits that will allow for a 6th set of clutches but do not have experience with them. I hope that this helps.
