Ford 300 w/ a C6 questions, help needed.

Post #1 by eighty-seben » Tue Jan 29, 2019 7:50 pm

I recently purchased a 1987 F-150 with a 300 six and C6 auto. I discovered that I need to replace the flex plate on it and was hoping an expert could answer a few questions for me.

While I have the transmission off, I'd like to replace the bell housing plate/starter index plate but can't seem to find the correct part number. If someone could recommend the best brand (if there is differences in material or anything) and part number to go with for this it would be greatly appreciated.

Secondly, who makes the best/strongest flex plate for my motor and trans configuration? I know it needs to be 164 tooth. But I want to put the best flex plate on it available regardless of cost.

And lastly, while I have the transmission pulled back, is there anything further that someone in my situation would replace or upgrade while I'm in there? New front and rear main seal? Anything and everything from general upkeep stuff, torque converter, even down to new bolts I'll gladly replace any of it. I want to take care of everything I can while I have the transmission off.

The last thing I'll do once the job is done is take it to a transmission shop and have them flush and replace the fluid, so any recommendations on the best transmission to use would be icing on the cake.

Thank you in advance to anyone that could provide some guidance.

Hi, I'm not a transmission expert but I have been through the cracked flexplate before.
The old flexplates did not have the reinforceing plate which eliminates the warping and cracking problem.
I don't know why you feel you need to change anything else.
If you want to change the fluid and filter why not do it in the driveway.
Good luck

The original bell housing plate was bent out of shape and wanted to put a new one on while I'm in there at least and figured I'd ask if there was anything else I should do as preventative measures and such, that's all.

So I'm basically looking for either an aftermarket or later model flex plate with the reinforcement plate. Any guidance or recommendations on aftermarket brands that may be stronger vs OEM with the reinforcement? I don't care if a racing spec flex plate is overkill for a stock motor I just want to buy once, cry once and put the best parts I can on it.

On the spacer plate you can use a any C6 plate off a 300 / 4.9, V8 302 / 5.0, or 351 truck engines. For a 164 tooth racing type flex plate look for a SFI rated zero imbalance. Yes replacing the front pump seal is good idea be careful not to damage the front pump bushing. Other things to consider are a good shift kit like TransCo and if you haul or tow with your truck a good auxillary trans cooler too. Good luck

I am still hunting for a project car to build but with my current low budget it's not looking so good. My Ex- Fleet of Sixes these are all long gone! :bang: 1954 Customline 223 3 speed with O/D, 1963 Fairlane project drag car with BB6, 1977 Maverick 250 with C4, 1994 F-150 a 300 with 5 speed.

Will an SFI rated,164 tooth flexplate for a Ford 289-351, internally/neutral balanced work for the Ford 300 six? The only options I'm finding that state a direct fitment for the 300 are non SFI rated products.

For instance, the SFI rated one I'm looking at as an option is PRW Xtreme Duty, part #1830210...

:hmmm: Maybe I don't remember right now if the crankshafts flanges of the 300 six and 289 / 302 are drilled in the same pattern, I think they are just not sure.
