Can I swap 2.83 for 3.20?

Post #1 by DoctorC » Fri May 31, 2019 8:22 pm

I have a 2.83 rear end, so 7 1/4, 4 lug.
I'm kinda diggin puttin a 3.20 behind my c4 and maybe not being such a dog off the line.
Can i just swap out the ring and pinion? If I buy an aftermarket 3.20 can i drop it in and pull it out if I dont like it?

Thanks!

Yes it can be done, have you installed a ring and pinion set before? Good luck on the swap

Not yet, but I read a post about a guy who had a street set and race set. He'd drive to the strip, swap the ratio, drag and have fun then swap and drive home. Apparently he had it down to a science of 45 mins.
So, that's heartening!
My dumb ass should be able to do it in a weekend!
First I have to do my carb+distributor upgrade tho...

Thanks for the reply!

I can't believe that for a 7 1/4" rear, an 8" or 9" I can because you would just need two different 3rd members set up with 2 different gear sets.

But I have been wrong before

Hi Bubba, know you are completely right. The post I read was about an 8 in rear end. I just don't remember if it was here or at vmf

Well swapping in a ready to go third member in 45 min is a excellent and with repeating of an operation your skills will get quicker. Normally I can set up a new gear set in a 9 inch in 2 to 3 hours on the bench in my well equipped shop. The intragal type rear ends like a 7 1/4, 8.8, Dana's Spicer's ect. are going to take aleast a hour or more longer to set them up when your laying on your back under the car. However once the set up has been done the first time there are some ways ways that you could make the swap between two different gears sets a lot quicker, such as these few methods.

1. Both pinions would already have their bearings installed and shimed so they install to the correct pinion height.
2. After the crush sleeve was previously installed to its correct bearing preload it is disassembled and a solid spacer is made to the same height to use in place of the crush sleeve. This is a also a good mod to do on any car that's used for racing or hi performance driving anyway as over time the crush sleeve can collapse causeing excessive clearance which takes out your ring gear set.
3. You also have two differentials set up with the ring gear bolted on and bearings installed and shimmed as needed for the correct gear patern.

Then with everthing pre set up before hand you could quickly assemble all the pre fitted parts and only need to set the differentials side bearing preload, and the correct gear backlash. Good luck on your swap.

So, along these lines I've started looking around and it seems there aren't any after market options for the 7.25"rear end.

Anybody know where I can get a 3.20?

Thanks

I went from a 3.08 to a 3.27 and am very satisfied.
So that may be another option to consider.

Although he says 2.83, you can bet he has 3.20's as well.

For future reference I was able to pick one up from http://www.neperformancemustang.com for 100 bucks.
They are pretty active over at VMF and had one laying around.
One more thing to put on my To Do list =)
