Noisy Input Shaft Bearing - 3.03 Three Speed Manual - Any way to quiet it some?

Post #1 by reweb67 » Fri Feb 28, 2020 5:40 pm

The 3 speed manual transmission in my 1967 Mustang with a 200 6 is noisy at idle with the clutch engaged (pedal up). If I push the clutch pedal to the floor it is quiet. It also is noisy while driving in 1st and 2nd gear but not much in 3rd. When I'm driving slowly in 1st gear (for example) there is a lot of whirring noise as I give it a little gas and then let off, gas let off, gas let off etc. Definitely coming form the trans area. I did some research and it seems likely that my input shaft bearing is making the noise. The car runs and shifts great. If not for the whirring noise I would not have any idea anything was wrong. It is loud enough that it is killing some of my cruising joy. The car is a weekend cruiser. I hate to get into taking out the transmission on a vehicle that otherwise runs great.

I'm thinking of changing the gear oil. Is there anything I can put in there that would help to quiet it down some?
I'm going to go under the car tomorrow and look around. Is there anything (an adjustment maybe) that I should check?

Thanks for any help!

No sorry the only way to really fix that whirling noise is to take trans out and replace that input shaft bearing while its out you should also replace the output bearing too, as it will be the next one to start making noise. It's really not that hard of a job to pull the trans. Depending on how long it's been since the 90 weight gear oil was changed it may take away a slight amount of the noise but I doubt it will be much help. Good luck

I am still hunting for a project car to build but with my current low budget it's not looking so good. My Ex- Fleet of Sixes these are all long gone! :bang: 1954 Customline 223 3 speed with O/D, 1963 Fairlane project drag car with BB6, 1977 Maverick 250 with C4, 1994 F-150 a 300 with 5 speed.

Thanks for the replies. Sure hate to pull the trans out of a perfectly functional vehicle. Then it's like - well should do the clutch, oh and rear main seal too! I actually could afford to do it right now but man what a pain. Not sure I could even find someone to rebuild the transmission?

Welp if you go through all that you could then upgrade to a 4 speed od or T5 five speed od. I believe adapters are available at Modern Driveline. Get the most benefit from your efforts. The od gear is a tremendous benefit for relaxed highway cruising. Imagine barreling down the freeway at 70-75 while your engine is loafing along at 2100 rpm or so.
