8) my 64 futura has 205/60-15's all the way around on 85 mustang gt phone dial wheels. now understand that if you try this combination you will need to get a set of wheel adapters that change the bolt pattern from 4x4.5 to 4x4.25 and the adapter is 1 inch thick. you may also have minor clearance issues with the tire and the fender lip in the rear. mine clears on one side, and just rubs on the other so will have to correct that before the car gets put back on the road again. by the way the wheels are 15x7 which is about as wide as you can go on the early falcons.

8) the 215/50's will have a shorter sidewall, but they are also wider by 10mm, which means less clearance.

You do understand that rim width is measured bead seat to bead seat not overall width? A 6" rim will usually measure about 7" outside to outside

FWIW 215/50-13 wheels are specified for 6"-7.5" rims. When fitted to a 7" rim, they should be 8.6" wide at the widest point.

For 205/60-13 the range of specified rim widths is 5.5"-7.5." When fitted to a 6" rim they are about 8" wide.

Backspacing is critical for the front. I would not go more than 4" or you will have A-arm cleartance issues.

I've got 235/60-15's on the back of my Comet riding on Galaxie steelies, and 205/75-14's on my Falcon mounted on Falcon steelies. The comet is about an inch higher than stock and the falcon is lowered 3". No rubbing in either case, but I haven't tried getting the wheels off the Falcon since it was lowered, so that may prove interesting. Both cars are '63 btw.

My 65 has 225-60-15 on the back and 205-60-15 on the front with 4.25 inch backspacing on both rims. They fit well but mine is sitting at stock height right now.

The fronts will clear another inch maybe two however I am not sure if the rears will clear as it looks like they should tuck right in but 4 and a half inch backspacing would have made a better fit to be honest for the rear.

I'm running 16x7"s with 4.5" backspacing with 215/60's on my '63 4dr sedan. I rolled the front fender lips up and trimmed the rear fender lips back 1/4" to gain a little extra clearance. Before the rolling / trimming, I only had fender rub in spirited turns. The suspension is all stock with the exception of a font 1-1/8" front and 7/8" rear sway bar. I don't think the wheel/tire can come out any more (less backspacing), but I do have about 3/8" extra clearance on the inside up front and about 3/4" in the rear.

Also, since the early 4-lug and 5-lug bolt patterns are 4.5" circle, I bought 5-lug wheels, using 1 lug as a common, I created a boring template and bored the other 3 lug holes and 60 degree countersunk them to fit my 4-lug pattern. I did this because the 4-lug choices are limited and I will likely swap my 7.25" rear end for a 5-lug 8" in the near future. If you choose to go this route, be certain you purchase wheels that have a flat center section and are only bored for the Ford 5-lug. Most aftermarket steel wheels are flat as well as most Aluminum dished wheels.

I have read of Falcon / Comets with 17x8's, 18x8's, and 18x9's with 35 and 40 series tires, and even one with 20x10's on the rear and 285/30 tires. Unless you go larger than 16's, I believe you're limited to a max of 7" wide wheels, at least up front (upper control arm clearance). Fat Man Fabrications offers a 2" drop spindle (Granada design) for early Ford's. This will allow you a wider range of width options as the wheel lip will move up in relation to the control arms by 2".

Also watch your overall tire diameter. 26.5" seems to be about absolute max on the rear of the '63 with stock suspension and axle placement. Moving the axle back a little will allow a taller tire as the close point is the front edge of the rear wheel well.

Check the below linked topic. There's a lot of useful info, though it was based around the Mustangs...

cool, thanks for the info, i went to the tire shop the other day and talked to the boss, he has a 1964 comet. he has 17's on it now but he showed me a picture of it back in the day with 13x7's on it! I asked him what tires he ran and he said 235/50 R13 which of course you cant purchase new anymore. I really wish at least one tire company would cater to us 13 incher guys with american cars. all i see now is the vw's with 13x8's and 175's stretched to the max. which cant possibly handle all that well. all i can find for reasonably fat tread for 13's is 205/60 and 215/50. I did find a toyo proxy R888 in 225/45 R13 but that sidewall is way to low for my falcon. is there even one company who still makes the 235/50 R13 out there! :bang:

I'd venture to say that you're out of luck for the 235/50r13. The 205/60 may be your closest choice. Anything smaller than 15 is getting hard to buy for and still have choices. I've found that Tire rack and Summit have some of the largest tire selections, but you've probably already seen their offerings.

Good luck.

yep, all they got are 205/60 and 215/50, and i still think a 50 sidewall is too small and would look sort of wierd. I guess im going with the 205's i have found a brand new full set for 320 bucks, gonna keep searching though.

Here's my 14x7 fronts and 15x8 rears with 175/65 Front and rear tires, has a little rub in the back had to trim a bit but she looks good, next tire set will be a 165/55 in the rear so no rub issues will be there the 175/65 was my test set :D

Where are you finding the 4 lug rims?? I have a set of 5" rims with P195/75R14 tires and want to have wider rims and tires on the back. The ones I have are off a 65 Rancher -4 lug.The widest I can go is a P205 on these rims which are original steelies with dogdish hubcaps which I like but I know the rims available are limited. Am thinking I would need to go with a 6" wide by 14 rim to accommodate the width I want. Any help you can provide would be great. Attached is a pic of what I have.

Thanks
Randy

Update.....so I bit the bullet and bought some American Racing 7x14 Outlaw II rims and some p205/70R14 tires to wrap on them. I really like the look and adds a lot of "bling" to the car. No rubbing issues so far but I have put 25lbs air in the Monroes in rear just to help. Hope this helps others looking for wheel/tire options.

Here are some pics. First one shows what it looked like before the new wheels.
