61 ranchero rear wheel size options.

Post #1 by Dragonlich1961 » Sun Apr 01, 2018 9:28 am

As stated, I'm looking for what size tires people have fit in the rear on a 61 ranchero.
Vehicle is mostly stock and being completely restored. Only modifications here that will affect options are, I have swapped in a narrowed ford 8.8 from an explorer with drum brakes. And I'm using 14 ford ranger wheels, mags that look like American racing's wheels, I'm not sure of backpacking on these.

Axle measures 56.5 wheel to wheel. Wheels are 14x6 with 3 3/4 backpacking.

How much clearance front and back do you have now?
A bad day Drag Racing is still better than a good day at work!

I am still hunting for a project car to build but with my current low budget it's not looking so good. My Ex- Fleet of Sixes these are all long gone! :bang: 1954 Customline 223 3 speed with O/D, 1963 Fairlane project drag car with BB6, 1977 Maverick 250 with C4, 1994 F-150 a 300 with 5 speed.

What I have now is a 215/70/14. Everything under the car is new. Wheels have a fingers width between the spring and the rubber.
I'm looking to use an American racing ar62 in either a 14/6 with 3.75 back spacing, or a 15/7 with a 3.75 backpacking. Front is at simulated ride height and everything seems clear it's just a little tight between the top ball joint and tire.
Rear is tight to the front of the rocker and close to the inside fender lip. Feels like it will contact the axle snubbed bracket inside the wheel well on turns.
Everything is new and springs are unsettled car is in pieces as I am currently fixing sheet metal.
The axle is a half inch total wider than factory axle. Looking to drill and relocate the axle rearward by 1 inch to fix the rocker panel clearance issue.
This tire choice is said to clear on 65 mustang by they have a full wheel well. My 61 does not.
Current wheels are factory wheels off of a 92 ranger and are similar to the ar62. Mustang take off wheels,(stock 14, steels) are wrapped in 195 75 14 and clear fine but I like the alum wheels with wider tire. It's hard to find tire fitment options for 61 ranchero's with small rims.
Car is very original in how it's being redone.

Have you rolled the fender lips yet? A 15 x7 might fit if it has the right offset. You can get or make a offset spring perch to move the springs inboard some too if you want to go bigger like 8 inch.

My tentative planing is for at least an 8 inch up to hopefully a 10 inch rear wheel on an early Falcon coupe this is going to be mostly a strip car with a little street use mixed in. So might be mini tubbing the wheel wells and posablely going a with coil over rear supention to get some more room then with the stock leaf Springs. Good luck

I have not rolled the lips due to getting ready to install new quarter panel's to fix rust. I don't need a massive tire, not do I want one. I just want a more muscle car looking tire then the pizza cutters that were factory.
