Welding around undercoat

Post #1 by powerband » Mon Feb 10, 2020 7:54 pm

My current '66 project includes rear torque box and spring hanger repair. A problem involved is heavy tarry undercoat . Suggestions appreciated how anyone's dealt with it for panel/subframe repairs.

I've used bonding as well as stitch welding for panel repairs and structural subframe/spring works best with good clean weld surfaces.

thanks

I have found that scrapping or using an air chisel to get off the heavy part of the under coating can work well, depending on the type undercoating and how hard it is. Next use a wire brush head on a drill or better yet a auto body grinder, then use lacquer thiner or Acetone for a final clean up. Good luck

I am still hunting for a project car to build but with my current low budget it's not looking so good. My Ex- Fleet of Sixes these are all long gone! :bang: 1954 Customline 223 3 speed with O/D, 1963 Fairlane project drag car with BB6, 1977 Maverick 250 with C4, 1994 F-150 a 300 with 5 speed.
