Power steering gear, T85 overdrive transmission 1973 F100

Post #1 by Jesse73 » Mon Apr 13, 2020 8:26 pm

Hi guys,

I am looking for a couple of things for my truck. I would like to add power steering as I rebuild the rest of the frontend, so I will need pretty much everything from the pump to the gearbox. Hoping to find a complete setup for a ‘73 six cylinder 2wd F100 or as many parts as possible. I could probably make my own brackets at home if a guy had a V8 truck setup.

I am also looking for a T85 3 speed transmission with a Borg Warner R11 overdrive. This will be for the same truck, it is for older models but I think it will fit fine.

Let me know what you have! Thank you Fordsix! Hoping everyone is happy and healthy
-Jesse

On the power steering parts for your 1973 look for the later model trucks like 1977 to 79 F150's these are a direct bolt to your F100. More than likely even the F250 and F350's are the same parts but I always found F150 parts easier, these later F150 trucks practally all had the power steering and power disk brakes witch will also bolt on to your 1973. Look Fo any engine for the power steering gear box and the power steering pump they are all the same parts and will bolt right on probally other years to. As far as the engine brackets that maybe a little harder to find but the six parts should still be out there yet if you hunt the wrecking yards. Some of the site members may have those brackets or is willing to find them see the below link maybe some help there. The T85 over drives were used in both cars and trucks starting in the 1957 Fords they are hard to get but you never know I had one that I was going to use it in my 1958 Ranchero that I pickup was a later version with Sincrowsincro first gear too unfortunately I lost that in my move a few years back. There was a guy in California going by "Sticks Unlimited" that I knew he dealt in them, rebuilt them, and sold parts, lost track of his phone number after I moved. Good luck

I am still hunting for a project car to build but with my current low budget it's not looking so good. My Ex- Fleet of Sixes these are all long gone! :bang: 1954 Customline 223 3 speed with O/D, 1963 Fairlane project drag car with BB6, 1977 Maverick 250 with C4, 1994 F-150 a 300 with 5 speed.

I have found a power steering setup at a local yard from a ‘78 ish f100. I took the pump and bracket off of around an ‘82 f150 so that’s set. Unfortunately the steering gear is about 3” longer in the column direction. I have a steering shaft from a floor shift model that is shorter I think, hoping to use the shaft and trim the column tube slightly and or move it up very slightly. I think I can sort of cheat a few things here and there to get the power steering gear in place.

Come to find out, the steering box from a bumpside era truck would bolt straight in place. But folks seem to agree they aren’t very heavy duty compared to the later units. Such is life.

Still seeking a T-85! I have found one for $1200, not ready to spend that kind of coin just yet however

Sounds like your all set on power steering parts except the colum which you could probably cut down a little to fit. Yeah that's pricey for the T85 but then they are getting harder to find, still keep looking I got mine for 200.00 and it was in excellent used condition I really like how they work.

Something else that could work if your wanting to still keep your stock column shifter is find one of the 1980''s 3 speed overdrives (they look like a top loader three speed) should be able to find one easy and at a much lower cost, you can then convert it to side shift removing the floor shifter install the regular top plate. You can then use your stock column sifter for 1st through 4th gears and use a cable for reverse. If you don't mind looseing the column linkage I had the light duty 5 speed in my 1994 F150 it worked very well for my purposes light hauling towing a cemet mixer etc. mostly just a commuter / driver the EFI 4.9 with that 5 speed got great MPG. Good luck
