94 f150 steering column won't slide on to steering box input spline

Post #1 by Humming » Wed Jul 26, 2017 9:14 am

Well the title says it, I have a 94 f150, I replaced the steering box, but I'm having trouble getting it to mate with the steering column. When I took the old box out I had to yank with all my might, so I figured it might be an issue, but I've probably got about 10 hours into various attempts to get the spline back on to the input shaft of the new box with no luck.

Any ideas?

Do you have the steering box and column clocked in the matching positions so that the splines are lined up right? Good luck

I'm not sure, I mean I tried rotating it all around. I've fought it for several hours.

Can you post some pictures of it? Basically the front wheels should be pointing straight ahead the steering box should be centered on its high point, and the steering wheel should also be (clocked) so it's centered. On the steering box splines as well as the steering column splines there should be a wider grove and matching wide spline that need to be lined up with each other in order for it to go back together right. Then if all splines are nice and clean it should slide togeather very easy. Good luck

Well, several months later, the problem is finally solved.

Every other Saturday it so I would head out to the driveway to tackle the issue again. I removed and reinstalled the steering box several times, cleaned and lubed both mating pieces several times, and had my wife rotate the steering wheel slowly while I tried my hardest to slide it in in every possible orientation, all to no avail. The only thing I hadn't done was try to remove the column itself so I could attempt to mate the two on my workbench. Eventually I quit trying. Finally about a month since my last attempt the Arizona heat broke, and I gave up and called my mechanic buddy. He came over and as I was demonstrating the issue, it slid right on. My friend didn't even touch it, but good mechanic aura scared it away.

I'm all seriousness, the only thing I can think of is that there was a slight thermal expansion mismatch and that the 30 degree difference between when I was trying it all summer and when I tried it this last Saturday made the difference.
