ABS and parking brake dashboard lights

Post #1 by bubba » Mon May 16, 2016 8:37 am

Hey,
I have a 1996 f-150 4.9 5 speed manual 2wd. The other day the ABS and parking/emergency (red) brake warning lights on the dashboard came on. Both lights at the same time came on and stayed on. Normally when I start the truck all the warning lights come on and go off, but these are staying on. The brakes work great except once and a while the pedal loses pressure. It doesn't happen often and the brakes still grab fine. It will only happen on one pump of the brakes, if I let off the pedal and hit it again the brakes go back to normal. This has been happening for a while, before the warning lights came on. Also the truck has cruise control. That stopped working a little over a year ago. I haven't tried it since I put on the new master.
In the past year I've replaced both front rotors, bearings, pads and 1 caliper. A few months ago I replaced the master with a rebuilt one. Any ideas what could be causing the warning lights to come on? Could it be related to the occasional soft pedal? My guess is it's a sensor that's gone bad. Any help or ideas is greatly appreciated.

On the brakes it sounds like you could have some air in the system or that the master cylinder is defective and is leaking / bypassing internally. You might see if you find someone with a power bleeder set up and see if you can get a better feeling pedel or else replace the master cylinder with a new one. Good luck

Hi, it may be a coincidence both lights are on. I would be concerned about losing the pedal. My last new master cylinder was about $50.That could be why your brake warning light is on. Make sure your parking brake is completely retracted. There are other reasons as well for the red brake warning light, but check the simple things first. Fixing that might shut the ABS light. For the ABS light you will need a scan tool. My sons friends go to certain auto parts stores for a free scan. I think a professional scan tool will tell you what is wrong with the cruise control.

Thanks for the replies. I crawled under the truck to check an exhaust leak today and noticed brake fluid leaking from one of the rear drums. I had a bad wheel cylinder. replaced that today, now the lights are out and the pedal felt fine when I drove it tonight. Hopefully that was the fix for both problems.

Good thing you caught that when you did. Don't ignore a brake warning light.
