Bad smell and rough operation at speed

Post #1 by ludwig » Thu Mar 23, 2017 2:18 pm

Late model truck gives out bad smell and starts to run rough at road speed. Not my truck, my son's. 2008 F 150 with 3 liter.

I used to have a similar problem on my 1986 302. Under load - usually going up a fairly steep hill with AC on - my truck would emit a stink from the vents. Apparently, my son's truck does the same thing at highway speed. What could this be or what causes it?

? ...

Wheezy engines - old or new - especially under load will increase blow-by with blue cloud stink and a plugged/ruined modern' catalytic converter can promote stinkage, .

Sometimes I drive past/thru a dairy farm with the milking barn on opposite side of road from pastures. @4AM and PM it's best to avoid the pungent striped trail across road...

have fun

I smelled a RAT ... and pulled it out of the heater. But the catalyst thing sounds possible, although it runs fine at other speeds.

Any other wisecracks?? ... I mean ideas?

:rolflmao: yeah those inconsiderate cows and stripped critters do cause quite a stink!

:hmmm: Ironically my 2006 Lincoln LT 5.4 (it's like the F150) dose emit some sink through the heater vents it smells like it's an oil leak. Mostly only happens during the snow and rainy weather. Can't find any obvious oil leaking out though it's hard to see the back of the engine that sits back under the cabs cowl. I haven't found the cause yet so no real answer or ideas, but I will sure be interested in what you find that it is. Good luck
A bad day Drag Racing is still better than a good day at work!

I am still hunting for a project car to build but with my current low budget it's not looking so good. My Ex- Fleet of Sixes these are all long gone! :bang: 1954 Customline 223 3 speed with O/D, 1963 Fairlane project drag car with BB6, 1977 Maverick 250 with C4, 1994 F-150 a 300 with 5 speed.

Hi, so my first questions are, any codes and scan data, and how old is the tune up? I'm a basic plugs and wires guy. If they are the original wires I would just change them. Good luck

He is not a big-maintenance kind of guy, although he works on his truck when he is interested in it. I suggested that he run a bottle of injector cleaner through it before getting it diagnosed - at cost in a garage. He did and told me that it is running better as a consequence.

I'll be seeing him this weekend and we can do a sniff test at that time.
