Gee i bet you guys all thing i'm a total cheesebrain :LOL:
Bingo! i found it in a photo. Its under the exhaust manifold for some reason, up the front (timing case end) of the engine.
Looks like JG23??762260 ... i'll get a closer look when i go home later.

Here it is:
JG23FB 76226C
and that last 'C' could possibly be an 0, too.

Falcon sedan, block stamped in May '85.

Official introduction of the XF was in October 2004.

Hmm...

Hi guys can someone break this code:

CG55NJ63107C
and the block has stamped: 72 0A 60158

Its a TC Cortina it doesnt have the original engine in it so just wanted to know what it had originally

It's a 1972 era block - 72DA 6015 B

The car's serial number suggests it was stamped in January 1973

It's the same block, either way. They just varied the crank, piston and rods to suit. Being a Corty might make it more likely a 200.

JG31XS is a Geelong made JG, Broadmedows assembled 31 Wagon engine, Sept 80 (x= 80, s=Sept)..

If its a Gold Coast/Brissy assembley, its JL, but still made at Geelong.

H = Assembley plant Code. Don't know about the type of streamlined plant alterations after 1985. The Geelong plant was rejigged after the Clevleand was axed in 1983.

So "G" was Broadmeadows, "L" was GC/Bris assembled, What was "H" in early the 70's era?

hi guys im new to this forum and ive enjoyed reading the information on here, im after some help working out engine numbers i have 2 engines to choose from 1 is jg23pr46848c and that block also has 72 da 6015bg the other 1 is jg31ne51516c, i would like to know if they are a 250 or a 200. cheers craig

The VIN code and chassis tag are required. From memory, a letter and number code defined the capacity on the chassis tag, and the only way to positively identify is measuring the free drop from top dead centre to bottom dead centre when a spark plug is removed.
79 mm is 200 cid,
99 mm is 250 cid.

Ever since 1971, all Falcons shared the same block, so a 200 could be a 250, and a 302c could be a 351c. Unlike a Cleveland V8, the head castings on the 200 and 250 are just the same , just the pistons rods and cranks being the difference. This ecomomy "two for the price of one" process continued with the last Cleveland V8s in 1982, and with the last 1991 3.2 and 3.9 EA engines.

Other option is to read of the Distributor code, and that has the advance unit which is specific to the 200 and 250, or manual and auto. Of course, people swap distibutors too, so thats not full proof either.

Guys, here is the definitive list for all pre-VIN Chassis/Engine numbers!

1st Character:
A=Ford North America, (F series)
C=Ford Britain, (Used for Capris, Cortinas, Escorts (UK sourced CKD kits))
J=Ford Australia or
U=Mazda Japan (Used for Lasers, Meteors, Telstars & Capri Convertibles (Japan sourced))
NOTE: The Geelong Engine plant DID NOT have a letter code as it never assembled cars there!

2nd Character:
G=Broadmeadows (Main assembly line)
H=Brisbane
K=Sydney (Homebush)
L=Broadmeadows (Secondary assembly line/s, trucks and some cars built at Broadmeadows and offsite (Cortinas) in the Coburg/Preston area)

3rd & 4th Characters are the vehicle types or body codes, eg. 1J=F100 4x2, 11=Futura Sedan, 14=Capri Deluxe, 17=Capri GT, 30=Capri XL, 33=Falcon GT, 47=Falcon Sundowner Van, 64=Fairlane Ghia, 78=Cortina GT, etc

5th Character is the Year of the build (eg. J=1969, K=1970, L=1971, M=1972, etc)

6th Character is the Month of the build (4 sets of 12 letters were used on a rolling 4 year cycle)

then, the next 5 numbers and a letter are the Consecutive Unit Number or Serial Number.

These, usually 12 character Chassis codes, were also the engine numbers used from around mid-1971 onwards. These codes were replaced in 1981 by the now familiar worldwide universal 17 character VIN codes, which are completely different to these codes!

NB//V8 engine code numbers are included as of interest in this post

These excluded the unemissionised New Zealand engines. Don Anderson reported some hp ratings for Wheels, but they weren't for all models. Engine codes remained the same as the non NSW state Australian engines

Australian Engine codes generally followed the American engine codes. The sheetmetal variances form stock roundbody US Falcons and Fairmonts were done via the traditional Aussie Letter codes.

XK, 1961-1963, A 60 US Falcon after the project name, XK 2000
XL, a local restyle and re-engineer of the weak suspension
XM, a local rework with additional strenghtening up grades, but aslo the snazzy 2 door Hardtop
XP, a Mercury Comete based body restyle, with very interesting block adaptors to suit the BW 35 auto
XR. Although the 66 Falcon looked American, it was reworked from the Canadain and US Falcons, with subtlely changed tail details by Jack Talenek. At this time, Ford Australia had already changed the engine block casting to a 157 and 160 teeth wide bellhousing quite unlike the 2.77 or 3.03 dual pattern bells of the US engines. The were no major changes from this bellhousing casting from 1966 to 1992, when the last 4.1 engine was sold in the last N-code XF Falcon Utility and Vans.
