Any 1 know the carbs for these (223)? Tryin to see what this OEM air cleaner housing will fit (air horn or top flange diameter).
Thin adapter fits over the carb & a/c housing sits dwn beside the motor.

some Carter I guess? YF? diameter?
Thnx. Ask a favor back :D

They used that type air cleaner on the big Ford and Mercury cars with the lower hood lines like the 1957 to 1964 Custom, Custom 300, Fairlane, Fairlane 500, the first few years of the Galaxies and their Mercury counterpart / versions. Most of those 223 engines used a Holley 1904 from 1954 to 63, some late ones also used the Autolite 1100 (1964 ?) but none of them used a Carter YF's. In spite of what the add says they didn't use that type of air cleaner on the 1952 to 1956 inline six'es they used an oil bath air cleaner, like was on my 1954 Customline with 223. Good luck (y)

that helps, thanks.
I need to measure the 2 carbs' flange/top-o-da-air horns now
1904 - holley
1100 - autolite
Any guesses there - they all seemed a standard dimension (as the AC housings needed to fit...

That air cleaner only works with the Holley 1904 and 1960. The 1100 used a different air cleaner. The flange diameter on the 1904/1960 is about 2.75” at the outermost point and 2” inside.

well.....yes'n no:
here's some of our correspondence (a fella who left PR & is now near Daytona):

The hole size is 2 3/4” but you got half an inch of adjustment. It is 1 5/8” tall after sitting on the carb.

Holley 1904 is most commonly used for the '50's Ford 223. But the Holley 1960 and other variations have the same air-horn at the top.
Early 215 thru 223's up thru 1956 used a big round oil bath air cleaner that clamped onto the top of the carb air-horn.
In the '57 model year, the old style oil bath air cleaner could no longer be used because the '57 and later body styles had become lowered, so they clamped a duct/hose to the top of carb and connected it to a filter box located on the side. In addition, the intake manifolds were changed to lower the carb mounting base in '57. But the '57 and some later years still had the Holley 1904 carb.
You cannot install a pre-'57 intake manifold on a '57 or later 223, because when you close the hood it will hit the top of the carb. You cannot install a '57 or later intake manifold on a '53 thru '56 engine, because the round oil-bath air cleaner will hit the rocker arm cover before it can be lowered enough to mate with the carb.

"...connected it to a filter box located on the side..."
kinda sorta what'll happen (most likely) on the '69 stang 250 in my '66-'77 bronk.
Don't like it over the exh. like that, will try'n figure how to get it over on the drvr's side...
May B Matt's carb hat~
