4.9 300 build

Sup guys, I’m new to this i6, and forums life looking for some help. So I have a 96 4.9 EFI truck that just blew a head gasket. I’m taking it apart, and sending it to a machine shop to see if it’s still good. My question is though. What can I do to add more power/tq to this truck? I don’t really want to do anything crazy to it, just want to keep it simple and give it a lil extra kick. It’s my first project truck really excited to get to working on it, and if anyone has some real good idea please let me know.

There isn't much you can do to it without freaking out your computer system. You can swap to higher lift/roller rockers. You can swap cams, but only a select few, and they probably arent much better. You could have one custom ground too. For the speed density efi v8s, the magic number for efi friendly cams is a LSA of 114°. I dont know if that applies to the i6. You may have mass air, which would open up a world of possibilities because you can tune that computer system much easier.
1985 Bronco. 309ci I6, NP435, 4.56 gears, Detroit locker and tru-trac, 4" lift, and 37" swamper tires. The 309 is 9.75:1 CR with a Schneider 140H cam, 4bbl, roller rockers, larger valves, and headers.

You can reduce exhaust backpressure with a low restriction exhaust system that will have no deleterious effect on the engine.

Your engine is sequential fuel injection and uses a Mass Airflow Sensor.
Installing a larger cam will increase low and midrange power very nicely but it must meet certain restrictions.

The stock cam has 268 degrees of advertised intake duration so the new cam must have close to that much in order to continue running regular octane pump gas.
The valves are short and will not allow .500" lift without running the retainers into the valve guides.
If you are going to rebuild the head then the guides can be cut shorter which would give more margin on valve lift.
The Stock ECM works best with short valve overlap periods so if you increase cam duration specs it is best if you also widen the separation angle to 112 degrees or more.

I recommend the Schneider 131H (13910)

When you change the cam it should used with matching valve springs.
You will also needs to replace the fiber cam gear set with an all metal set.
