The best method is to lengthen the crankshaft keyway to accept a Chevy keyway which is roughly twice as long and engages the damper and crank gear much more readily and securely.

I get them from the engine parts distributor I have an account with. Usually in Dura-Bond or Pioneer brand. They come individually or in finishing kits. I buy a finishing kit with every engine kit, it’s inexpensive and makes life easier. If you can’t find them locally, try one of the online engine parts distributors, engine tech, northwestern, falcon global.

If you still strike out, PM me and I can send you some.

:hmmm: You can also buy key stock of the needed size and cut it to proper length.IIRC,it comes in 6" or 12" lengths.Any machine shop supply company should be able to supply it with no problem.
One outfit I used to work for purchased it in 3 ft lengths,as the used a great deal of it.Almost forgot. You might also try Fastenal(spelling?).
Good luck.Have fun.Be safe.

Thanks everyone for the replys. So im not sure i can cut the keyway out much bigger as the lower end is already put together on this motor and id imagine that keyway would get milled bigger correct?
Also thanks max for the parts breakdown. It shows the crank woodruff is 3/16 by 1 3/4. When i search for that i find 25 packs of pioneer keyways that show thell fit a 460 or FE crankshaft. I think i have a few 460 cranks laying around i might see if that keyway is the same before ordering or just use one of those.

:hmmm: Hi FTF.Is that the half round type key?I was thinking square profile. That`s what I get for thinking :bang: :rolflmao: .However,if the square profile is whats needed, the places I mentioned are good places to inquire.
Good luck.Have fun.Be safe.

Tractor Supply had woodruff keys in several different sizes when I was in there the other day. Not sure if they fit this application, but they have them.

Any machinist type shop will have them. My engine builder did. Woodruff keys are indeed the rounded key. Woodruff keys usually come in "standard" sizes. This is party due to the fact that woodruff key cutters come in certain sizes.

MSCDIRECT.COM has them, but minimum order seems to be 25 pieces.

I purchase a small kit from headbolts.com. For $8.95 you get: Engine finishing kit Ford 240 / 300 / 4.9 liter inline six cylinder engines
2 cylinder Head to block Dowels .6745 x .435
2 Cam Thrust Plate Bolts 5/16-18 x 3/4 Cap Screw, Hex Drive
1 Woodruff Key 3/16 x 1-3/4
1 Cam Key 3/16 x 3/4
1 cam snout Spacer 1.516 x 1.255 x .194
1 Oil Galley Plug 1/16-27 x 1/4 Internal Hex Drive

They have many interesting and useful items for these engines, like the cam thrust plate, head to block dowels, h.balancer bolt and washer, etc.
