in the mid-late 70's there were some add-on kits for the motorhomes equipped with the 403 and 440 engines to help detonation (if there were more manufacturers I am unaware) but the downfall was how badly it eroded the manifolds and exhaust system, from the inside out; even at the exhaust port in the head. You didn't know anything was wrong until the exhaust started leaking at whatever area finally gave out. When you went in to repair one thing, the rest had to be replaced because it was too weak to hold. Today we have way better materials for manufacturing but water vapor still does its damage; and like a teenager, you never know when or where.
