Converting Throttle Linkage???

What all do you need to convert from the stock 66 style to the later cable linkage??

Types of cars to look for?? Maybe find the stuff on ebay??

I'll have to scrounge this stuff on the internet. My local junkyard doesnt have any 6 popper cars in it right now....

Also, How do you rig up the kickdown linkage for a automatic??

I'm going to convert mine as soon as I figure out how to do it.....Tired of messing with my current setup   :x

Thanks,

Doug

I used the Lokar stuff, maybe a little pricey but it works quite well. Have since seen it on Ebay for a little less. I have not hooked up the kickdown yet, but did install the accelerator pedal and throttle cable as well as the column shifter for the tranny.

I'm in the middle of planning this conversion too.
I was able to hook my stock '61 linkage to my H/W 5200, but then I tried hooking up a Mustang kickdown lever the linkage would bow and twist.

I got the pedal and cable linkage off a late '70's Faimont, but it has a big ugly bracket that bolts over the valve cover. And I believe the Clifford adapt won't allow me to rotate the carb to put the linkage on the firewall side needed w/ the bracket.
I contacted Clifford and they sell a bracket/adaptor to hook up a cable throttle to a Weber or a H/W. I will hopefully get it soon and will find out more. Then probally go with a Lokar univ. throttle cable
As for the kickdown, if the Clifford bracket works,I'm thinking I'm going to try to hook it up to my gas pedal lever kinda like the late 60's early 70's GM T350 had. They have two cables, one to the carb and one to the tranny. I'll weld a tab onto the pedel lever and go with a Lokar C4 kickdown.
All of this is still in theory stage, but it just might work. I'll let ya know how it comes out.

Does the lokar stuff come with all the brackets etc that you need to install them??

I was looking in my new Summitt book and they are a little bit more expensive than what I wanted to spend right now

IIRC, I remember someone on here saying they got the Fairmont pedal, then used bicycle brake cable for the throttle cable.

Doug

If I am not mistaken you can use the throttle linkage and cable off of any later model Ford product. I think someone here at one time said the cable and linkage from a Ford van worked the best as the cable was longer.

I used a pedal and cable out of an early fox-body stang. It was a straight 6 so I used the cable and the bracket that goes over the valve cover... Worked great with the Holley 1946 I had....

With your Holley 2bbl you may be better to go with a GM throttle cable as you can get cable mounts from any parts house.

Your going to have to figure how much pull your carb needs to achieve full throttle and go find a cable with that amount of travel.

Have fun!

Kirk

I've looked at the GM throtle cable brackets, and I don't think they will work with a H/W because a Holley pulls different than a Weber. CW vs CCW
I'm going to try go with the Lokar cables system 'cause they are supposally adjustable.
The Lokar throttle cable is only $25, but the C4 kickdown is $50. Kinda pricey, but if it works, its worth it to me.
FYI.. I talked to Tom at Stovebolt, and he doesn't have any throttle cable brackets for the H/W. He said that I'd have to custom make something.

I know the pre '74 OHC Pinto 2000 cc engines had C4 automatics. They used a steel tube kickdown. Couldn't one of you fine gentleen take the kickdown rod dimensions and transfer it to the 200 I6?

In Australia, the 250 2V had a C4 option with a kickdown tubular rod cable. Someone there must have dimension.

Yo Man!!!

I got everything off a 78 Fairmont..

Pedal, Hardware, cable, engine bracket (that goes over the valve cover)....
(All from a yard in Arizona... 25 bucks to my door...)

Then I trimmed the pedal bracket about 3/4" because it was too long..
mounted that, ran the cable through the firewall and to the engine bracket(which also holds some other lines nicely...) and to the carb.
(I had to get a longer cable since this is on an Aussie 2v... but that was no problem.. you can even use Bike cable)

This is Mustangaroo's setup... he downloaded everything to me a while back...
Worked great for under $40.00 for everything.

This is a problem that I was not able to figure out and I have never come across a real good solution on this or any other board. Of course you can use a Fairmont, Granada etc cable and pedal and that will work fine for the throttle. The problem is the trans kickdown. The fairmonts, IIRC used a vacum kickdown so that the cable was only needed for throttle. The man trans cars have no kickdown. On our auto trans stangs the stock throttle linkage is hooked up to the trans kickdown, I ended up doing some mods to make the stock stuff work bending rods and extending rods.

Just wanted to point out that the solutions that worked on your man trans cars will not work here. I would love for someone to find an easy solution because that would open up mt carb options even more!!!

The Fairmonts did not use a vacuum kickdown. They used a manual kickdown rod. There was a spring loaded lever (on a bracket that mounted to the intake log) which was connected to the kickdown lever on the trans. via a tubular rod. When the acclerator was pushed down enough, the carb. lever contacted the spring loaded lever which pushed the kickdown rod. This was on 6 cylinder cars using the Holley 1946.

I used a Lokar kickdown cable have had no problems at all. Easy to install, too.

I have the same set up as jimbo as far as the cable mine came off a granada and well i have a 250 with a C4 from a 78 granada and all the brackets were there for the kickdown as well.

Thanks for the pics! ;)

I believe that I have the bracket out in the garage that goes over the valve cover.....

I guess its time to start looking on ebay for a suitable pedal!

As far as the lokar kickdown linkage goes, I'm assuming that the part number you guys are using is LOK-KD-20C4HT??? Thats the part number out of my summit catalog.

Thanks for the help guys!!!

Later,

Doug

That's the same number from my Lokar book for the kickdown.
I just recieved my cable throttle bracket from Clifford after only TWO days!!!
It is a Redline-Weber kit that mounts to the carb. I think it might just work.
My Carb is mounted differently(Float in back, linkage on pass side) so the stock over-the valve cover bracket won't work.
I found these sites that have lots of linkage and parts for Weber carbs. They even have some cool air cleaners and adaptets

Top-end Performance is local so I'll stop in on Fri and see what they have firsthand

Could you use the setup from a Maverick? It seems to have a mechanical kickdown with a cable throttle... mine even does this weird-assed 90* turn at the carb that looks like it would work with a H/W, or eliminate it for a fore-and-aft pull like an Autolite. Might have been tried; I'm new at this...

I just dropped a Mav 250 and C4 into my Stang. However, I have not yet installed and connected the throttle cable or kickdown. I can't remember the kickdown situation, except that the Mav tranny did not have the lever for a kickdown that the Stang C4 did, so I swapped it over. I am not sure how this is supposed to hook up to the throttle linkage. Thoughts?

Nate.

Doug, I used cable and pedal from 78 Granada. As for the kickdown, I dont use one. I have B M shifter so I just shift down to 2 gear to pass. Russell

I used the original pedal and throttle "bar" assembly and fabricated my own linkage assembly from a piece of 3/4 inch flat bar. I drilled two holes, one in each end.

I can post pics later if you are interested.

I used the stock C-4 kick down setup for the 65 Stang.
