144 to 170

What needs to be done to make a 144 a 170? They both have a 3.5 bore, so I would need to change what? Also, What is better, Solid or Hydrolic lifters?

8) you need to swap the crank and pistons, i believe the rods are the same length.

I think I may have a 170 in my truck already, but I want to be sure. The Cast # is C3DE-6015-E. Is it a 170 or do I need to look further? What and where are the ID marks I need to look for (without breaking the motor down)? I know it has 3 freeze plugs so that can go either way.

I don't think that there is any way short of measuring the stroke. If it has the original paint, the 144's generally had blue valve covers and air cleaners, and no other paint on the engine. 170s mostly had red VC/ air cleaners, but this is by no means a rule. They are externally identical.

Howdy Dave:

The C3 code Was used on both 144s and 170s from '63 & '64. Both blocks were mechanical lifter cams. The only sure way I know of is to mesure the stroke. 144 = 2.5". 170 = almost 3".

The fuel pump on my engine from my parts book says it is for a 170. part number c3oz-9350-a. Would it be backwards compatable with the 144?

Also, can you see the "N" or "T" stamped on the block without removing the head?

8) all the small six pumps interchange physically. the lines were rerouted on the later pumps though.

Try this to measure the stroke.

Get the first cylinde to top dead center (TDC) by aligning the timing marks on the crank pulley and the timing chain cover.

Pulling ALL of the plugs makes it MUCH easier to turn the engine over.

Get a stiff piece of wire - the bottom of a coat hanger will do - Put a BIG loop on one end so it can't fall in the sparkplug hole. If you ask how I know to put a big loop in the wire so it won't fall into the cylinder, I'll lie.

Stick the wire down into the hole and put a mark (magic-marker) on it. Then turn the fan (belt has to be tight) to turn the crank to drop the piston in its bore. Play a little with the fan, going back and forth, when you think you're to the bottom of the stroke. Make a second mark,

If you've got 2.5 inches it is a 144
If you've got 2.94 (dang near 3 inches) inches it is a 170
