What can be done to a '63 170 head to improve performance? Give me all the info ya got. Thanx..ZZ
 
Valve upsizing, porting the exhausts, multi-carb conversions. Higher ratio rockers and a split pattern cam will help, too.

.....I'VE BEEN DOWN THIS ROAD. AFTER ALL I NOW KNOW ....I'D LEAVE YOUR HEAD ON....WHILE GETTING A 1970 MAV. 170 HEAD. IT HAS ALL THE MODS. YOU WANT AND GIVE THE GOOD TOP END.

.....YOU GET THE LARGER CARB. AND LOG TO START. THEIR ARE LARGER VALVES WHILE THE COMPRESSION IS HIGHER. JUST THIS CHANGE WILL GIVE GOOD PERFORMANCE.

..... TRY THIS STOCK 1970 MAV. HEAD FIRST AND THEN YOU CAN MAKE CHANGES AFTER THAT. THIS WAS WHAT FORD DID TO GIVE AN IMPROVEMENT TO THE MOTOR. YOU CAN NEVER GET THE LARGER LOG ON THE 1963 MODEL AFTER YOU MAKE THE LARGER CARB. MOUNT AND VALVE CHANGES. THE 1970/170 HEAD WITH A GOOD VALVE JOB SHOULD GIVE SOME GOOD IMPROVEMENT FOR THE SAME MONEY SPENT.


.....ALSO CHANGING OUT THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD TO THE 1970 MAV. WILL CHANGE THE SIZE OF THE PIPE WHICH IS A BIG CHANGE FROM THE 1963 MODEL. THAT CHANGE CAME BACK IN 1965 AND FORD INCREASED THE H.P. TO 105HP. THAT'S 4 MORE HORSES. YOUR COMP. GOES FROM 8.7/ 1 TO 9.1/ 1. THESE ARE FREE ALSO WITH THIS HEAD. BE SURE TO MAKE THE EXHAUST CHANGES ALL THE WAY BACK SO YOU GET THE DIFFERANCE. GET A BETTER MUFFLER AND YOU GET BETTER PERFORMANCE TOO.
