THe simple answer is "YES". But, even though it would bolt on there are some other issues that would effect perfornamce. The casting codes of the 170 head as compared to the head it will replace would be needed to definitively answer your question. I can give you some info in the waiting time.
The only castings unique to the 170 are C1DE, C3DE & C4DE. From 1961 into the 1965 production run. The C4 castings may have been used on the earliest 4 bolt mains 200s found in '64 & possible some '65s Fairlanes.
All of these castings that we have been able to measure have 1.52" intake valves and 1.266" exhaust. Chamber volume range from 48ccs to 55ccs. most were close to 52ccs. These castings have a smaller intake tract volume too at 890ccs as compared to 1100cc for a C5 to C9 (the C9 "M" head is an exception) castings. These castings have a slightly different shaped chamber for a slight improvement in chamber-to-bore ratio, but more valve shrouding. They do not breath as good as C5 and later castings
From C5DE casting on, we have found no differences between the 170 and 200 heads. Beginning in C5 Valve size was increased to 1.649" intakes and 1.38" exhaust. Theses sizes remained constant until the end of the 170 production in 1972.
FoMoCo manipulated CR with flat-top pistons in the 170 and dished in the 200s. Deck height seems to be a little tighter in 170s too.
wsa11 has some FelPro gaskets for a 144/170 that are the thinner, steel shim type. I have not been able to check this out yet. He said they were the same part numbers as the FelPro Composites for the 200/250. The bore of the gaskets, between the 144/170 and the 200/250 is different.
If you will report back the Casting #s you're looking at I can give you a more accurate answer as to the details. As always, the devil is in the details.
