Engine in car or out? If it's in, it can be rather difficult. There's a tool for this task, called a sneakey pete, but it can still be a challenge. Once you get the old seal out, replace it with the newer neoprene style seal. Offset the seal ends so they don't meet at the block parting line. Oh, be sure you tap out the small metal spike that holds the rope seal in place on the rear main cap before installing the new seal.
