170 running lean after autolite 1100 rebuild

Hey I need some help. My 170 is running very lean and missing badly after I rebuilt my autolite 1100. It puts out a lot of white smoke when you hit the accelerator. It also misses very badly at idle. I have tried adjusting the idle mix screw but it doesn't really help much. Can someone tell me how to measure my float with the paper ruler that comes in the rebuild kit and where it should be? I assume I can rich out the carb by adjusting the float?

What is this engine in?

White smoke usually comes from water in the combustion chaimber. Is it losing coolant?

Check around the carb base for a vacuum leak. Use an unlit propane torch dirrected at possible leak spots like around the carb to manifold gasket area to try and locate any vacuum leaks. The idle will smooth out if you find any leaking areas.
