1964 Merc Comet I6

Hello to the forum. I usually hang in the bb forum, but today I looked at a cherry 1964 Comet 202 (emblems say), and was wondering if some forum members might lead me through some details like identifying the engine, what would be needed to add power, etc. The owner says it can't get out of it's own way. It has an auto trans, and the engine is original. It started after sitting for months. No smoke. No knock, smooth idle.

Is it possible to boost power enough to make it safe on the road? To upgrade the brakes?

Thanks!

easy way to tell a 170/200/250 apart is the freeze plugs, and water pump, 200/250 has 5 plugs on pass side, 170 has 3, 250 has 4 water pump bolts, 170/200 has 3.

 Congrats those Comets are really nice! Yes there are many ways to add performance depends on how much you want to spend and how much time you want to invest, but they are very easy to work on and respond well to simple tweaks. Being a 1964 if it's still stock it may be a 144 or a 170 engine if you have the Vin number and the door tags can decode them for you. In either case a 170 be modded for decent Performace or a 200 six will bolt right in place easy and if you don't mind some extra work a 250 will fit fairly easy, both would give a great boost in performance and for that matter if you are up for some serious modding so will a 300 too. If it has an old two speed MercOMatic then adding a better C4 trans (1972 up are best but early ones can be improved too) will make it into a great driver! Then there are the 5 speeds or AOD and more trans chooses. Good first mods are installing a better DSII distributor and a matching later model carb. A two barrel carb or 3 1V Offy carb set up is also good, a cam upgrade, with a better exhaust system including a header etc. As for the chassis / body there are many mods for improved handling and braking too and since the Mustangs was based on the Falcon / Comet chassis any of those mods done to a Mustang also can be done to a Comet or Falcon. Good luck

yeah, the:
'68 or better carb
"...matching later model carb."

ID what's there and (you know how 2) check the compression (as U have lots of experience) is pretty important.

fo sho aint no 300, eh?
