Help, just installed the rebuilt head from the shop. engine started right up, after 5 minutes ideling got red hot at exjaust manifild junction, head is a C5DE 6090 A, new valves, seats, springs and and started glowing red, at the exhaust pipe junctionhead, had head shaved .020 and exhaust manifold and exhaust port shaved to get a good seat on the manifold, also installed a port divider. compressio 135 LBS each cylinder

..Any help is appreciated

Either the valves are not closing completely, too long after shaving the head of the distributor timing is way off.

A new motor that's tight can generate a lot of heat. Unlikely this is the sole cause, though. Ignition timing, fuel mixture or cam timing would be the areas to check.

Regards, Adam.

the engine was running fine before we had the head done, the shop said it was probally a mixture and timming set, but, the original carb and the timming have not ben touched before we took the head off, All remained the same when I reinstalled it.

Thanks All

If you lowered the compression that equals retarded timing.

Mixture and timing and compression go hand in hand.
More compression less timing. Less compression more timing.
Advanced timing will help an overly rich condition, starting the fire sooner to help burn all of the fuel.

If the exhaust is glowing red then there is likely a flame present when the exhaust valve opens causing an excessive amount of heat in the manifold.

Check the timing and adjust the carb and see if this helps. Remember the timing marks might not be correct. Make a note of the current timing setting and advance it then see iif it helps.

Got it going today, no glowing exhaust, changed out the carb and readjusted the timming, had a vaccun leak causing a lean condition, Can now put on my 3ldebrock tri carb setup.

Thanks all
