Background: 1965 mustang coupe in the process of a restoration. The car was undrivable when purchased. Block is 1978, head is 1977.

-What kind of distributor do I have? Cast# is C5DF 12127 K.
-Can this distrubutor be modified to become an electronic ignition by
adding a pertronix kit or do I need to buy a durasparkII? I want to get away from the points/condensor setup, and Im not totally familiar with the options I have.

Below are 2 pics of a 1b Carter YF that came on the vehicle.
-Is that the carb I need for a daily driver? Also, Ive labelled some ports on the carb and if anyone could tell me what they go to, I'd appreciate it. Ive included the space as an inset in the second pic. Many thanks!

The distributor is a Load-o-Matic type. If you're looking for an effective upgrade, then the size of its internal broaching for the oil pump drive shaft will flavour your choices.

Are you able to measure that hex shaped recess, across the flats?

For the carb ports, their location is a clue of sorts.

#1 is pre-venturi, so minimal vacuum. It's at the ambient conditions inside your air cleaner housing and may be used to feed the heat pipes that eventually go back to your auto choke.
#2 appears to be under the throttle blades and fully exposed to the manifold, so say it's manifold vacuum.
#3 is your hot air infeed for the auto choke.
#4 is venturi vacuum for the later (dual advance) distributors
#5 is also manifold vacuum, probably for a PCV hookup.

Howdy Mac:

Adams got your carb vacuum ports covered.

This distributor is designed to work in conjunction with a carb with a Spark Control Valve (SCV) such as the stock Autolite 1100. The Carter YF carb shown does not have provisions for a SCV. Your best bet is to upgrade your distributor to a later Dura Spark II system or the '68 and later point type upgrade with PetroniX Ignitor. Use the #1 vacuum source for a ported vacuum signal on the YF carb to the Distributor vacuum advance.

Adios, David

Thanks for the great information Addo & CZLN6. I should have added that I have a C4 trans, but I suppose that doesnt matter. So my current distributor works best with a carb that has a SCV. Makes me wonder what the car ran like with the previous owner.

CZLN6, when you say,
"or the '68 and later point type upgrade with PetroniX Ignitor."

Do most folks here grab one from the the junkyard, or buy a reman from Napa? Is there any certain Ford year/model I need to look for to be sure the shaft and cam gear are correct length, etc., or are they all compatible to fit the 1977 200 engine? I like what IVe read about the Pertronix Ignitor 1 and the Flamethrower Coil.

Again, many thanks for the replies!

Mac, the Carter YF is considered to be a very well made carburetor and one of the most efficient at deliverying fuel. It is less commonly found on the small block sixes, but is a standard carb for many model years of the big block sixes. This one appears to be in very good shape.

The dizzy, as mentioned above, can easily be swapped out to take a Duraspark II dizzy if the shaft of the C5 dizzy is 5/16". That 1965 year is right in there with the break between the 1/4" and 5/16" oil pump drive. The best way to tell is to pull your distributor out and measure it.

The DSII distributors are readily available at any parts store. Look for a single advance unit, from about a 1978 Fairmont. They will run from $35 to $50. Other parts include the ignition module, cap, cap adapter, wire set, and a true 12 volt coil for the DSII. All said and done, this $100 to $125 upgrade is an excellent ignition and great investment.

Moreover, your engine is not timed correctly with the load-o and carter, and that's costing you mpg and performance.

Thanks John and I forgot to answer Addo's question which is the same question that you ask. The distance of the hex shaped recess across the flats is 5/16" inch. -Mac

Good - you have the later oil pump and shaft, then.

I would suggest a Duraspark ahead of points distributors, but when either is freshly rebuilt, and the points unit is retrofitted with an Ignitor, there's probably very little disparity in performance.

If it's feasible, install the existing distributor gear onto whichever type you choose.

Howdy back Mac:

From '68 to somewhere in the early 70s, the small sixes got a point type distributor that had both centrifugal and vacuum advance, and would be compatible with the YF carb. Upgraded with a Petronix Ignitor and coil would work fine and look stock.

I prefer the DS II system, and all of mine have come from the recycle yard. Just check the shaft for no wobble, and be sure to get the harness that connects the distributor to the module, the coil with connector and the plug wires. IF the shaft has no wiggle, the only other wear is the cap and rotor, which can be easily replaced.

I've had all of my DS IIs recurve for better performance. I've never paid more then $40 for the whole works and I got to disconnect it myself so I could get all the wires I wanted.

The Carter YF was the standard Ford six carb for all engines from 1970 to 1979. It is a good system that is just a little harder to tune to engine modes, because of the vacuum controlled metering rod assembly on both main and power systems. It also suffers from a weak accelerator pump system, but is easy to refresh with a rebuild. Kits are relatively cheap and easy to find.

i couldnt find a dsII in the junkyard for an i6 so i went to autzone and bought thew dizzy and ignition module for about $75 total. the only thing i had to do was make the harness that went from the module to the dizzy which was easy all i did was cut the wire plugs and crimp new wires with connectors. to save on costs i had a stock coil from autozone and it was a 12v been using that for a while now with no probs. also the cap for 77-later cars used a 2 piece cap and used different wires with a female end on the dizzy however the 76 cars used a 1 piece cap with the same wires your old dizzy has so i got the 76 cap everything workd great i had pertronix and the 68 dizzy. after pertronix failed me i switched to the 68 points then to the dsII the dsII beast all of them.

I too grabbed a DS II from a junkyard. It was off a '77 Granada with a 250 engine. I put it in and didn't find any performance difference. Then I started checking: the vac advance was leaking, the centrifugal advance didn't and the coil was weak. If you do get your parts from a JY please check them out right away. I went to a KrangenAutoZooMurrays and bought a new dizzy and coil. With tthe good parts and the re-curve in the sticky it runs a ton better.

Thanks everyone. Ive purchased the parts mentioned by "66 E100 Pickup" at advance auto and I think all I have to do now is get some wire for splicing into the distributor and starter relay. What gauge wire is best? 12? Thanks.
