I have a 1960 Comet with a 1970 200ci i6 motor in it. It has the larger bellhousing and there is a 3.03 3speed column shift in it right now. I love the power of the vehicle except the tranny vibrates like crazy and the motor almost seems too big for the engine bay as far as height is concerned on the bellhousing. I was wondering is anybody had any ideas on how i could either get a different tranny or lower the engine down further so there is no contact between the top bellhousing bolt and the firewall.

Thanks

This'll prolly be easier with the engine in place.

Seriously, you ought to be able to loosen the motor mount bolts (on the engine side of the brackets coming from the frame) and slide the engine forward a bit, unless that'd put the radiator fan into the radiator.

Bumping the firewall back isn't all that hard, though.

Well if i pass 60mph on the highway the car starts to vibrate like crazy. And i cant even get up to seventy because it rattles things loose. It doesnt start to vibrate though until i hit about 55 mph. O and the reason i wanted to lower the engine is because the drive shaft joint off the back of the transmission was rubbing on the firewall so i had to lower the tranny a bit.
Let me know if you need more info.

Thanks

Check/adjust your front wheel bearings first, then have your tires balanced & rotated.

If your driveshaft u-joint is rubbing against the "tunnel", it sounds like the wrong motor or trans.mount is installed. Which can create an excessive angle on the drive shaft which could also cause vibrations. my .02

I'm wondering if they checked the pilot bearing fit when they did the tranny swap. Are the pilot bearing sizes the same for a Dag vs. 3.03?

sounds like a tire prob... if the whole car is virbrating after 55 tire balance..... if the whole care shakes its usualy the back tires if the stering wheel shakes it usualy the front tires..
U joint running the fire wall  thats almost impossiable as the fire wall is in front of the tranny.. and just behind the motor where the back of the hood is....
I know you mean the floor tunnel... that would have to be a real bad angle to do that.... the motor should look level when looking at it and the tranny should look level as well. something is way out of wack if you u-joint is hitting the tunnel.

I had a u-joint go out and with my car lowered I am running a LOW driveline angle. the joint locked up and was deflecting the mounts. when I would hit 55-60 it would vibrate like crazy.

Heres the thing with the vibration. It actually used to be really bad at 45mph but after tightening the transmission mounts i was able to get it to about 60 with no vibration. I actually have brand new tires all the way around and new wheel bearings because i thought that was the issue at first. Sorry i meant the floor tunnel on that.. Although the bell housing doesnt hit the firewall.

Im thinking it could be the angle like some are saying because the engine and transmission actually look like they are at an elevated angle when looking at them level

Did a new u joint fix it or was it new mounts or both

Isn't the engine supposed to sit in the car at a slight angle, with the rear a tad lower than the front?
