Sending my head to the machine shop for a rebuild, have read the froum about using 170 valves, can someone please calrify exactly what I need to tell the machinist all I need done. I am planning on using a 3 X 1 carb setup and headers, and a small cam, Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks

I would read the sticky's on oiling hints and maybe head swaps, on what you can do once you get the head back to help on the oiling of the upper assemble.
I would have the machinest put in harden seats and guides, cut back the intake valves, 3 angle valve job and maybe bigger valves not sure sence your going the 3X1 intake way.. are you going to be modifing the log or are you going to be using the adapter that bolts to the log??

It would be most helpful if you would give us the casting # on the intake log, behind the carb pad. It would also help if we had details like what car? What year? What trans? What is the long range plan? Compression Ratio goal?

There is no advantage to using 170 valves. It is the size of the valve face that really matters. If you're working with a 200 or 250 larger exhaust valves can be helpful, depending on your complete exhaust system and cam. The suggestion Tim outlined are useful in any head rebuild.
