223 Rebuild 1st start, wont start

Hi All,

Looking for some help diagnosing this issue so I can fix it before I wipe out the cam. I just had my 1962 F100 223 rebuilt. Machine shop put together the bottom end for me (New pistons/rings 30 over, new main and cam bearings, new timing chain/gears and they set the timing and installed lifters and cam). I am using the original cam and lifters, I lapped the valves and they decked the head for me and tested it to make sure it seals.

I tried to fire it up today to break it in and got nothing. After checking spark, I went back and reset the valve lash to .019 and then tried again. Now when I try to start it pops and burbs, but won't fire off. It does turn over somewhat slow, so I am wondering if I might need a new starter?

Any ideas on what I might be missing?

Any help is appreciated!
THANKS!

Make sure the timing chain and gears are oriented correctly. It’s not the standard line up the dots technique. You have to line up the blue link or something like that. I’ll check the manual tomorrow when I get home from work.

IIRC the parts are the same as the ones used in the V8 Y Block.

Quick update. I got it running. The distributor was 1 tooth off.

Ran it for 30 min at 2200 rpm. Never got over 160 deg and kept 60lbs of oil pressure.

I do have one pretty good leak i have to deal with. Can't tell if it's coming out of the front of the pan or bottom of the timing cover.

Is that something I could rtv?

That’s great news! I knew the timing had a non conventional setup but couldn’t remember exactly, it’s been 11 years since I set mine up (after a no-start).

Adding a blob of RTV couldn’t hurt just don’t be surprised if it doesn’t last forever. I would degrease the area really good first.

I'll try that. Thanks!
