250 or 200????

i have a 65 mustang and had a 66 200 that i was going to stick with until i took it to the machinist and he sonic mapped it and said the cylinder walls were too thin and they would need to be sleeved so he economically suggested just getting a new block; but at least the crank was in good condition and able to polish up nice. i checked around and for a standard bore 200 & i am looking at $400 for just the block. at the another place there was a 250 complete engine for $400. im trying to build a torquey engine and i think the 69' 250 is has more torque than the 200? also i already bought a 4cyl t-5 for my 200 will it fit the 250? and will the 66 bell housing and 9 inch flywheel fit it? also the hood clearance issue??? and im taking a risk on the cylinder walls on the 250 aren't i? arent there less performance parts for the 250 such as the balancer, oil pan, and timing chain??

thank you

the lack of a timing chain is a slight down fall for the 250 but it hasn't stopped many guys on here. as for a t-5 on the 250 you'll need a v-8 tranny and i'm not sure if there is a conversion to go to a smaller one, not like you'd want to. I can't beleive you can't get another 200 though you should be able to buy the whole car for that much.

I would stick with the 200 in the long run it will be the easier direct bolt in. $400 is way too much for a bare block. How far over size is your block with the supposed thin cylinders? Where are you located at?

the bores are already .40 over and the machinists said it looked like they didn't even bore it directly in the center it was off to the side. o and im in los angeles.

Geeze ... that company sells small block V8s for less than the inline sixes.

thats the same reason small block chevy parts are so cheep.selling in volume brings down the prices.

Well, I have a virgin '66 block you can have for free, but it's in San Francisco. I'm working out a deal for some big block Ford stuff with a fellow in S. Calif. maybe he can help. Keep searching craigslist; one will show up there cheap in your area before too long.

Lack of a timing chain? Huh?

V-8 tranny? Why?

The 250 shares the same bell housing pattern as the 289/302. And there's no double roller keyed timing chain available for the 250 like there is for the 200.

I realize all of this but the original response should have been clearer. No upgraded timing set, and he'd need a V8 bellhousing for the 4 cyl T5.
