Me and my mates lifted a 351 clevo out of an XE falcon using a method like that.... we had 6 guys and a long pole... Some how it come out.. ANd never ever ever again...

Mate, you must have been pretty keen to get it out.
I still think I'd rather spend $50 to hire a hoist from Kennards, but I've done similar pulls on smaller engines, using rope and makeshift pulleys.

Incidently, how did your left-hand guard hold up?

I remember pulling an engine out of a Transit with a mate. We just said "heeeeaaaave-ho" and lifted it up and forwards with a wooden beam roped to the motor mounts and water pump. I think it's nicer to have the right gear these days - but buying it can often be more safety effective. It's those times when you improvise in a rush, that injuries are the biggest risk.

BTW, I had to buy 75×75×3mm plain steel RHS the other day and it's now over $25/metre! Don't think you could DIY an engine hoist for less than buying one, with materials rates like this.

i guess you have to work with wat yo u got but it aint real hard to build a tripod and hook a chain around it.

Please be careful - engines and gearboxes are plenty heavy and can make a mess of any of your bits that happen to be under them if they fall...

lol i wasnt the one using the bar and tyres. we got a tripod which works perfectly.

Fenders held up great.. 3 guage steel = FORD Built TUFF

heres some pix i took this morning of the engine + engine bay

i hate those bloody thin stabilizer bars those cortinas have. there thinner that the 1.6 escort.

the only engine i've ever pulled out without using a hoist was out of a VW beetle, just unbolted it and picked it up. but i don't think i'd ever try doing it that way
