2nd hand gearboxes

I'm looking for a 3-speed all synchro box to suit an XT with a 221 precrossflow engine. Are there any ways of telling what condition (servicable/unservicable) a gearbox is in without actually driving the car or pulling the box apart?

You are meaning in the donor car, still?

I would check for ready engagement of the gears, excessive slop in the shift levers and yoke rotation, oil stains and evidence of botched drain plug removal.

It seems that about XA is when they started fitting the reverse plunger switch into the casing.

The boxes seem solid and simple; not sure if input shaft lengths vary. Your palette of donors may be pretty wide.

I have 3, 3spd gearboxes if your interested. 2 are XT and have been unused since 1983, one was fitted to the car the other was in the boot. The last one is out of a XA, it was in the tray of the ute went i bought it. I dont know about condition of any of them. PM me if you want to know more

XA onwards the 3 speeds have a longer extension housing.
