Hi, i'm Tom and i've just found this site, this would be my first post so please excuse my stupidity.

I'm the proud owner of a rusty Ford Falcon XC with little brakes or suspension and a smoke blowing motor.

The question is about the motor, i think only aussies would know about aussie Fords which to my knowledge are a fair bit different but any input is welcome.

As i said the motor is a pretty crap, it is a 250and it's good points are that it has extractors, V8 carbi and.. thats about it. Would a rebuild be the best option or instead find a replacment 250 in good nick? If so from models aside from XA XB XY WY will fit?

Thanks, Tom

Tom, After careful consideration I feel I need to study the motor a little closer. If you will send it to Carthage Texas Freight prepaid I will fully evaluate this motor and get back to you. For a proper evaluation I will also need all of the parts you plan on using, cam, carb, pistons, ect. Of course I will need to install it in my Mustang and test it extensively. Since our fuel is a little different than yours I will also need a couple thousand gallons of fuel, just ship it with the motor. I will let you know how it turns out!!! Gary Stubbs

I would rebuild the motor or at minimum new rings and bearings. Many of us Yanks would love to have that motor.

If the car is not rusted too bad I would fix it.

A rebuild or not depends on your goals....if you are looking for a little better performance upgrades, then a well rebuilt engine with the right parts will be stronger than a used one.

In fact it will be more economical to sell the engine to me and use the money towards an alternate used one!

XC = Crossflow iron head right?

Scrap it and get a XE-XF to wreck, prob pick up a junker with no rego/wof for less than $300, scrap that for good bits and drop the (hopefully) alloy head into your XC, should bolt straight up, and with any luck, get efi version (XF only?), extractors should bolt on too, bonus power.
Try and find an old rusted out XF with efi, change over the dif,box and engine.

I got a rust free, clean XF Fairmont Ghia EFI for $500NZ, no rego or wof, seems to have a shagged oil pump though.

In short, replace it!
Try and get EFI 250 alloy head engine, spend a bit on a rebuild, while your at it, if your not replaceing the box, rebuild that too, change the dif to a 9inch.
While the engines out, get a start on the rest of the car...

And watch it snowball.... :?

If your not willing to spend a bit to make a bit, chances are the head gaskets shagged, and thats easy to replace.

Remember, if you buy a car to scrap, you can usualy sell alot of it to make most of your cash back...

Tom, I just rebuilt a 4.1L xflow (XE 83DA) for about $300.

New rings and conrod bearings, rope seal plus head overhall kit. That and the hoses, oil, coolant, etc. came to around $300.

The head was pretty good, all I did was wirebrush the chambers and ports, lap the valves, and install new valve stem seals. I honed the cylinders with a 4" wirebrush and a sheet of sandpaper!

Sounds dodgy, but this engine goes hard now.

You may find a similar rebuild is possible if your head is ok (I presume you have a cast-iron crossflow). Pull her down and have a look.

Worst case is another donk from the wreckers, plenty of crossflows to choose from.
