61 Comet with 144 make loud grunting noise at highway speed

Hi,

When I go above 50 mph the car shakes and I hear a loud grunting sounds coming out of the engine, especially when I accelerate. It fells like the car is about to explode. I overhauled tranny, balanced drivshaft, etc so I doubt(hope) it's not the tranny. The only thing I have done differently is put in 20/50 oil but I can't see how that would hurt. Under 50 mph everything is great but something is really stressing over that.

Pete, You say that you "hear loud grunting sounds coming out of the engine" when you go over 50 MPH. Is this a male or female engine?? I am sorry. I couldn't resist. Seriously, what about the u-joints? I have never had my driveshaft balanced before. That is something they do while it is removed from the vehicle; is that right? If so, is it possible the u-joints did not get installed just right when reassembling? Good Luck! Jim

Manual or auto?

It's manual. Three on the tree. I balanced the drive shaft , U joints changes and tranny and clutch rebuilt last year.

Have you got full, fresh fluid in the differential? What about your engine mounts?
