I purchased a 69 mustang coupe with the 200cid straight six engine inside it was jerry rigged all over the place and needed a new battery , it took longer than i expected to purchase a new one, so during that time i changed the distributor cap and sparks now the engine won't start up it turns over but it just won't go. i know it's a newbie question but can anyone help? could be your points, check and see if it is getting fuel, accelator pump work? fuel pump delivering fuel, could be several things...how long ago was this car in running condition?

When debugging a non running engine that has no major mechanical problem I like to use the air, fuel, spark metheod.

air is easy to check in most cases it just requires the removal of the air cleaner and checking the air filter and the carb throat for blockages.

fuel is almost as easy look down the carb throat and watch for gas to shoot down the throat as you open the throttle all the way. If indought prime the carb with gas or use a spray can of starting fluid. If the car has been sitting long the gas in the carb could be gone, or the gas in the tank could be bad. Priming the carb will help to decide wether either is keeping the engine from starting.

Spark is a little trickeer but still straight forward. You need a strong enough spark at the right time.

To check if you have spark remove the coild wire and place it about 1/2 inch from a good solid groung (metal part of the car i.e. the engine). You should get a solid blue spark and an audible crack sound that should raise the hair on the back of your neck. If you don't you will need to check the distributer first for bad points or condenser and if you are getting positive voltage to the points at the wire to the point with the wire to the points diconected. lots of other check can be made in the distributor but mostly you would just need eighther point or condenser. You should also check the coil.

If you have good spark the next item that can be checked is timing. you will need a timing light and to follow most of the dirrection a good shop manual will give you on checking timing. since your engine is not running this will be a gross check just to confirm your in the right ball park.

A final word don't be afraid to use a good quantity of gas to prime the carb, 10 onces or more. also you might have to crank the engine longer than normal so keep a battery charger conected to the battery. also when priming be carful about sparks, you don't want to havew a fire and just in case keep a fire extin. handy.

My personal opinion is that you carb has gone dry, I've seen this happen in as little as two days, and needs to be primed. hopefully nothing else is wrong. I am assuming that the engine was running before.

Good Luck

I'LL BE TESTING ALL THESE THEORIES ON SATURDAY THANKS FOR THE HELP. OH, AND THE CAR HAS BEEN SITTING FOR NEARLY6 MONTHS NOW, ANYTHING I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THAT?

if you didn't put gasoline stabilizer then i would empty the tank add a new fuel filter and rebuild the carb because, gas that's sat for 6 months in the same place turns to gum from my experiences.

That's why people make gasoline additives so you can let it sit for a long time without it gelling up and such  . LOl and yes this has happened to me before....

Maybe you got lucky though and it hasn't sat long enough. try pumping the gas to see if your carb is squirtingout fuel. if not i'd rebuild it first or at least take it apart and clean everything then reassemble it. If that doesn't work then i'd put a new fuel filter and drop and clean out the tank.

After you do get it fired, do yourself a favor go to your local autoparts store and put some gasoline stabilizer in the tank unless you have to drop it and empty it.

The car sat for six months. Well I'd check for spark at the number one plug, if youget good spark then prime the carb and try it, chance are good that your carb is dry, maybe the float stuck down.

good luck
