A Muffled Question

Hey guys, do you install your own muffler?...My exhaust sounds like an old lady blowing through a paper cone....my pipe looks decent coming from the exhaust manifold back to the muffler, then thats where my sputtering is coming from...We are getting hammered with rain here in southeast Texas, so I havent had a chance to look at how the muffler is connected...Are they on with clamps or are they welded for the most part...My Meineke guy here in town says he wants 170 bucks for complete install from maifold to tail pipe...Dont want to do that. I will eventually get a Cliffords header and go from there.....Anyways, is a muffler install something you can do in the driveway, and if so or not, any suggestions what muffler to get for a completely stock inline 200 that sounds decent, but not like a goofy import??

I found a good article in Mustang Monthly about after cat exhausts..Plus searched the posts on mufflers, nevermind guys, got it figured out

I've done my own exhaust once. By the time you get all the parts together, locate this and that along with hangers and clamps, you'll find that you might have saved $5 over the installed price. Then you have to start crawling under the car and working while stuff drops in your face, and it will take a couple hours. The shop has the welder and the lift and you can read a mag or watch Mr. Rogers while HE get that stuff in his face.
For the few bucks you save, it's not worth it to DIY.

Ok, You talked me into getting a shop to do it. I think I'll pick my own muffler and take it to him and have him put it on .... The right way.. If I do it, it may fly off after a day or two

Decide what size pipe you want now and then you don't have to change the pipe after the header goes in. The stock 6 takes 1.75" pipe. Reading other postings, the guys here recommend 2 or 2.25 inch pipe for performance mods. When you get the header in, the muffler guy can cut it in front and stretch an adaptor for the 3" outlet to a 1.75 or 2" pipe and weld it up. I installed my header after a new pipe and muffler job, then I made an adapter myself out of scrap pipe and clamped it until I could get to the shop for a permanent install.
