Acceleration Problems/Mysterious Noise

Hi All - New Member here, and this is my set up:
1966 Coupe with a fresh (<200 miles) rebuilt 200 I6 w/Autolite 1100 1BBL. Pertronix I with flamethrower coil, C4 Auto Trans. 2 1/4" Single Exhaust w/Magnaflow Muffler,...My Daily Driver. My Goal: To have a solid, and reliable daily driver!

My Question(s):

Once I'm off the line and underway, I get this rattling noise, but very loud like a clackity clack sound and it progresses and gets louder the harder I accelerate (only while i'm in motion). When I coast however, it's gone, and when I'm in park and reving the engine, it's non existant. My father believes it may be vacuum related, so I will check this but any other suggestions? It seems as though this now constantly occuring noise has limited my acceleration abilities - although I am still nursing the new engine.

If my goal is to make this car a reliable daily driver (in los angeles!) what other mods would you all recommend? (Cost is not a huge concern if it truly means a more reliable ride).

HI AND WELCOME TO THE BEST INLINE 6 BOARD
I'd say check timming and make sure you vacuum lines are hooked up right.. I have heard of people having alot of problems with the Pertronix set up.. You might want to check into a dura spark I or II set up out of an 80's or so 200 streight swap pull and replace along with the control module.
Good luck

i would suspect the flex plate/ starter/ torgue converter area. These flex plates are prone to cracks especially in mid 60's

Sounds like predetonation to me. Generally described as a pinging or knocking sound (there are two difeferent type of predetonation, each amkes a different sound). If you have predetonation your new engine will need new rings and bearings _very_ soon, possibly more time consuming and expensive work as well.

Check your timing and amke sure you are not getting too much advance. Stock settings I believe are 6* initial and 30*-38* of mechanical advance in by 3000 RPM or so. If your timing is not in that ballpark then get it there, unless you know what your doing with your timing and know you are not getting predetonation.

My 66 Falcon with a 200 I6 is supposed to run at 12° initial advance. I think I run it around 14° or so.

Thanks for all of the suggestions and advice! I will double-check the timing tonight. danwagan, As for the flexplate (which is only a $45 part) how difficult are these to replace? As soon as this noise and loss of power are dealt with, I can move on to more exciting things – such as searching for a 2bbl to upgrade to, and perhaps a duraspark dizzy. Feel free to chime in with other daily drive mods that you all recommend. Thanks again for the terrific support.

You will have to pull eather the tranny or the hole motor depending on what is easyest for you.. as the flexplate is attached to the crank between the tranny and the block. Its what the tq converter is attached to. quite a job if you ask me. :roll:
