Engine noise, and not the good kind.

Hi everybody, new here on the forums. I'm gonna cut to the chase with my little problem that I'd love to solve. In my currently daily driver 1965 Mustang coupe, my 200 seems to have a knock. The thing is, at first it was a tap, and has escalated. I have all original parts. I recently dropped this engine in after buying used for $150. Old engine decided it was gonna be a 200 five cylinder. I have already replaced the fuel pump with one I know makes no noise, hoping it'd be a simple fix like that. Nope. now the noise itself is hard for me to get a location, but the sound is a tapping that does not increase or decrease in pitch with change in rpm. But the noise does get faster or slower with the rpm, respectively. I've read about dents in the oil pan, and climbed underneath. I saw no visible dents, and decided not to pull the pan. Anyways, any experts willing to lend a hand and help me get this solved? (Don't want to just drive until it dies.)

is the starter bolted on tight... ask me how I came up with that one
do you have adjustable rockers? you might have to adjust them
auto or manual trans? it could be the throw out bearing

8) you might want to go ahead and drop the oil pan anyway. sometimes dents are not noticable.

I had (knocking) went through H to find it, turned out that the crank thrust bearing that keeps the crank from moving front to back was worn and the noise was the crank floating front to back, check this by using a large srewdriver behind the hamonic balancer, then pry it rearward, you should have no more that .012 maximum movement.

hard to help w/o more specifics on general area of the motor (U no it's coming from there?) from which the sound emanates - top, bottom, side, etc

Some locate the general area and carefully touch that region to ID better (hot, moving prts - caution). Same Q from another - all were cautioned about the dangers but some use a tube (IV or fuel line etc) as a stethoscope or a solid bar of some sort (long screw driver) to place around & better locate the exact location. Belts, fan can kick these things into projectiles w/out care. Longer hair can B caught, etc

Others use a sound file uploaded somewhere accessible by us...
