Has anyone bought a cylinder head from one of those 'autozone,Pep boys,Advance Auto,Kragen Auto, etc.? i was looking at a cylinder head for a 1980 200 I6,Advance Auto has them for 279.00 with exchange, they have new valves, rockers, seats, and valve springs.i was wondering if they actually measure twice and cut once with the machining, and do they do a good job in general with parts like that? i've heard a couple of horror stories about parts stores getting heads with too much shaved off,1 maybe 2 valves of a different size than the others, stuff like that. it cost me 210.00 for a guy just to ream the valve guides and do a valve job on a 200 head, the head gasket was another 25 bucks

I haven't bought a head from Advance, but with just about anything I buy, I check out the warranty and if I am suspect with a part such as that I usually dis-assemble it just to see what I have.

For $279.00 I would certainly entertain the idea of buying one instead of repairing the one I have in the event of needing a rebuild.

If you do buy it, let us know about the quality it please!

i just had mine rebuilt a few times. never thought of buying a new one.
Like johnny ray said. let us know if it is of decent quality.

Just remember that the 1980 head will be of the 62cc chamber size flavor. So, if you want to run a CR higher than 8:1 you will need to have it milled down. More money

i worked at advance auto for 3 years, when it comes to their heads, the warranties are good but make sure you check the head out good at the store when you pic it up

i ordered the head, when it got here it had new valves, valve guides, rocker arms and new seats,no springs i also asked the guy at the counter if there was a way i could verify whether or not the head had been magnafluxed and maybe 'surfaced' to clean up the head,he said he would find out,so i refused to pay for the head until he found out, other than that,i still think the head for 279.00 is a good buy.

a couple of years late in getting back on this, but the head has worked well i never installed it,i traded the head for a Colt 1911 .45! anyways the guy who got the head has put 40,000 miles on the engine,no troubles whatsoever and his compression ratio is just shy 9.1 to 1 all cylinders have even pressure

Better late then never...thanks for the update.

I was trying to remember when that last time I saw Johnny Ray around until I saw the dates.
