Aftermarket muffler on stock exhaust

Just thought I'd pass this on to those of you looking to replace your stock muffler with an after market unit.

Don't buy anything that says "Cherry Bomb" anywhere on the mufflers packaging. If you do, your exhaust could sound like mine - pure rice!

Now, this may not be true with headers but with a stock exhaust manifold and 2" dia. piping, it will!

If someone could host a sound file, I would record my exhaust sound for reference (need to record it first).

yea! cherry bombs suck and also cause more resonation than a straight 4' pipe...i know...my freind used to say that when i mashed the gas by his placeit sounded like a hopped up ricer.... so i got rid of the cherry bomb and left the 4' of pipe...its actually quieter...and sounds sweet..getting sidepipes soon though....i can host the sound file if u want....i never done it before but i think all i gotta do is link it to myy website...

I run a cherry bomb on my 200 with stock manifold. Never heard the comment that it sounded ricey. I had a sound file of it with a slight rev and then idling that folks that heard it seemed to like. When I rev it you can tell its not a V8 but it also doesnt have a weedwhacker ricer sound either.
Just my opinion from hearing my own car.

I INSTALLED A FLOWMASTER 40 SERIES DELTA FLOW & IT SOUNDS LIKE A DOG CRAPPING RAZOR BLADES AT ANY RPM ABOVE IDLE.
WHEN I DO MY ENGINE IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS IT WILL BE REPLACED BY A LARGER TURBO MUFFLER OR ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE WELCOME. AGAIN WILLIAM

Well, it doesn't sound like a weed wacker but it does sound a bit on the ricey side. It's probably just me.

simon said he would host a sound file for me as soon as I can get a recording. I'll post an update soon.

Now, if I can just find that tape recorder....hmmmm....

I was gonna put on dynomax super turbos, but my exhaust guy told me that there would be no sound, or not the sound i wanted. He told me to go with magnaflow, so i did. it sounds good at idle, but when i'm in the car stepping on the pedel sounds kinda ricey (a voommm sound) to me because i'm in the car. never heard the car be driven, because i'm the only one who drives it  .

 There is a visual image for you. Thanks for the laugh.

My stock exhaust is starting to get a few pin holes and I have been contemplating a new muffler. So a couple of weekends ago, common sense went out the door and I spent an hour taking off the muffler and in its place put a straight through Harley muffler I had. I wired a clamp to a hanger and hit the road at 10:30 p.m.. The muffler is a little on the small side at 3.5" dia. It did sound a bit ricey and also had a European sound a full throttle. That is until the damn thing fell off and was draggin' under the car. I don't know why I felt like I had nothing better to do than to create work for myself. Oh well, it basically told me that I would need more than a straight 3.5" x 18" muffler. Well I have another scratched up Harley muffler to put on my riding lawn mower.

I"m unhappy with my flowmaster 50s. Sound great at idle, nice on the highway. Suck at 2000 RPM and at 3/4-WOT. 2000 RPM has a tinny drone, at WOT...well, it's just not me. I'm going turbos, because at this point, I want no sound.

OTher thing I've noticed, not sure if it is just me, or my car. But my flows sound pretty crappy (the actual muffler, not the exhaust) when the car is cold. It may be something else rattling, but definitely sound like something in the muffler. I wonder if the temp of the muffler has anything to do with sound quality?

most people say that the sound of an I6 with a straight pipe sounds like crap...i only have 4 ft of straight pipe and it sounds awesome...u can barely hear it at idle...my idle speed screw is off cause forsome reason it idles too hig with it...and it does sound ricyish and annoying in the car since the pipe comes out right under the passanger seat...but i have let my dad drive it and i love the way it sounds...it has a nice rumble at all the city driving RPM's...the sidpipesi am getting go from 2" at the inlet and the main pipe is 3"...it should sound really good or really quiet i think...plus i'll havea little extra back pressure which i probably need....but i do love my straight pipe and if ididnt needto have a proper exhaust for air-care then i would just extent dual straight pipe all the way back...i do get a kick out of driving high RPM's...sounds like an airplane

so what should I get?

I want sound, and I want nice sound?

from what I hear flowmaster is out, but I heard that dynomax has a nice sound with the single in and dual out. this is going to be done in the next two weeks so I need to know what is going to be best, I don't want to put something on then turn around and replace because I don't like the way it sounds.

Mike:

What about a Pacesetter exhaust tip?

I don't like the 2" inlet 5" outlet kind, you know the "ricer" stuff....

I had the dual tip slant cut on my 81 Capri with stock 200 motor.
That's all I had. I hollowed out the cat. & pitched the muffler.
Yes, there is a drone at around the 3000 rpm mark but anything over or under that was fine.
Plus you have a nice look at the back of the car.
Or you can have it exit before the rear tires (if you have room)

Chris, where in the system did you have the cherry bomb? Do you have a full length system coming out the back of the car?

When I bought my Maverick 20 years ago, it had one on it. When you take it up to 4,000 in first, and let off the gas, it REALLY gets noisey! Good thing I never tore the rod caps off of it...And if you would be in 3rd gear, turn off the ignition for about 3 seconds, then turn it back on, it would explode about a 3ft flame out the back, don't try this with a stock muffler, it will pop the seams (my buddy found this out in his van, copying me) Mine was mounted under the back seat, not next to the tank. Now I have a cheap Turbo muffler on it, and that is still too noisey for me, at 60mph, you can hardly hear the radio, or talk. I guess it's not too loud, I'm just too old? Muffler also under seat, I have heard it makes them quieter, mounted at the back. The best I liked, was when I had headers, Turbos, and both pipes out the back on one side, not one on each side. It rumbled like a V-8 at idle, and still sounded good going down the road, too bad they didn't work when I went to the 250...I guess I need some 250 headers.

Rande, I plumbed a 2" dia pipe from the exhaust manifold straight to my muffler (which is in the stock V8 position) then it exits out on the right.

See...

That's got to be the hand of someone who can draw cartoons. C'mon, strut your stuff!

got a falcon with a 250ci straight 6 its got extractors and a 2 1/2 inch pipe coming out the side, sounds like a big v8 beasty as hell.. gives people a scare... aint no road goer though

bad ass art man

being an artist who CANT do sketches that well, I applaud you!

Personally I think Borla's would be the way to go. A friend of mine has them on his 99' stang GT and they sound really, his car is stock except for thoose. I do know Borla's are made for small displacement engines so i think they would work great for I-6's. The nice thing about my friends is they have a real sexy tone that doesn't drone while cruising or around town, but when you get on it they sound nice and mean.

I have a Ford Racing cat-back kit on my 98' stang GT it sounds good to. Ford Racing sells what they call dual mode mufflers that are supposed to be really high flowing but with a nice mellow tone. If they sound anything like the ones that came with my cat-back kit then they should sound great. I guess these dual mode mufflers have some sort of internal valve that opens when you get on the throttle but closes when your cruising so you don't get that droning noise when cruising or on the highway. Something to look into anyway.
